Showalter speaks after 10-3 loss

Too much Josh Hamilton tonight. That pretty much sums up the Orioles' 10-3 loss to the Rangers before an announced 11,263 at Camden Yards. The Orioles outscored the Rangers, 3-2, without Hamilton's four home runs and eight RBIs. Maybe they've found a loophole. So ... too much Josh Hamilton? "Yep," manager Buck Showalter said. "We didn't score many runs, either. I think you've got to tip your hat to their pitching staff, too. We've obviously given up a lot of runs in a couple nights to make it tough. Obviously, Hamilton had a big night." To say the least. Did Showalter get to the point where he just had to appreciate what he was witnessing? "I'd rather see it from a different dugout," he said. "He's been doing that to a lot of teams in baseball. Not to that extent. He's a good player, a really good player. He does a lot of things. He's one of the best players in the game. You can see why." Did Showalter give any thought to walking Hamilton? "Now? Yes," he said. "The situation dictates it. They've got good people behind him, really good people all the way through their order. Obviously, he's a premiere hitter, but so are about seven or eight of the other guys. It's a good club." The Orioles gave up 23 runs in nine games leading into the series. The Rangers have scored 24 in two nights. Jake Arrieta was charged with six tonight in 6 1/3 innings. "Not much margin for error there," Showalter said. "(Neftali) Feliz was pitching real well and if we could hold it at three there, we felt like we could make a run at them. But Hamilton kept that from happening. The big thing with guys like him is you've got to try to minimize the damage with people on base and that's hard to do. There's just not any breathing spots there. It's a very deep lineup. That's why they played for the world championship two years in a row. But we can play with them." Rather than go along with the idea that Showalter had some trepidation about facing the Rangers, he said, "It's just the respect due to people who have done the things they've done. Same way we feel about Tampa Bay coming in behind them. This is the big leagues, it's tough, it's a challenge, it's very hard to do and we've done a good job with it so far. We'll turn the page and be ready for tomorrow. "There are good players in the big leagues and they've got a lot of them. We've made a lot of mistakes and I think that's it as much as anything. I'd be the first guy to tip my hat to them, but we're capable of better."
