Showalter talks about the trade (today's game postponed)

Manager Buck Showalter was late arriving to today's media session because he was trying to wait until the Joe Saunders trade became official. Instead, he dropped hints to reporters until the news finally broke. In the blink of an eye, we received confirmation that Saunders was acquired, along with cash, for Matt Lindstrom and a PTBNL, and that Jake Arrieta had been recalled from Triple-A Norfolk as today's bullpen replacement. Arrieta could move into the rotation at some point. Saunders will join it later this week, most likely on Wednesday. "He's got some American League experience," Showalter said. "He'll start for us at some point when we talk to him and figure out where it best fits for him and us. We'll see. This came together pretty quickly. There's a lot of competition. Obviously, there were a lot of clubs interested in him. "Matt did a good job for us here. It was a tough conversation. I feel good that he's going to a place that's kind of in the same situation as we're in. He's getting a little closer to home. They're getting ready to go to the West Coast. They're in Arizona the next three days. He's from out that way. But it was a tough conversation for Rick (Adair) and I and (bullpen coach) Billy Castro. "He should feel real good that he was coveted enough to give us something that we feel like helps us with the depth we need to compete." The White Sox have announced their starters for the series that begins Monday at Camden Yards. The only certainty for the Orioles is that Wei-Yin Chen will oppose left-hander Francisco Liriano in the opener. Miguel Gonzalez is listed for Tuesday unless he's needed in relief today, which isn't likely with Jake Arrieta in the fold. Left-hander Chris Sale will start Tuesday for the White Sox, followed by Jake Peavy on Wednesday and left-hander Jose Quintana on Thursday. If today's game is actually played, the Orioles will attempt to win their sixth straight at home against the Blue Jays, which hasn't happened since they won 19 in a row Sept. 15, 1978-May 2, 1981. They hadn't won five straight home games against Toronto since July 11-Oct. 4, 2009. Update: Today's game against the Blue Jays has been postponed and will be made up as part of a single-admission doubleheader on Sept. 24. Game 1 will start at 4:05 p.m., with all gates opening at 3 p.m. Tickets for today may be exchanged for the Sept. 24 game or any other non-prime game, subject to availability. Ticket exchanges must be made by Sept. 26. The Orioles will let us know whether Chris Tillman is starting on Monday or if the rotation will undergo more changes.
