TORONTO - There was further discussion today with manager Buck Showalter during his pregame update today on the 10th inning here last night. With two outs and none on, shortstop Tim Beckham made an errant off-balance throw for what looked like a critical error that was actually scored an infield single.
Then with two outs and two on, another grounder to the left side kicked off the glove of third baseman Renato Núñez and went under Beckham's glove as the winning run scored. It was a tough inning for two players that would like to show the Orioles they can handle that side of the infield now that Manny Machado is in Los Angeles.
Showalter was asked if he talks to those players after a tough inning like that.
"Renato just got to the big leagues, first day and did all right," said Showalter. "Swung the bat well. Timmy has been playing third base and he's over at shortstop. Both of them are out there working with Bobby (Dickerson, infield coach) right now. Just trying to get comfortable. It will take a little while."
So leave them alone after a tough game?
"Especially with a guy like Núñez," said Showalter. "Leave them alone and let them play a little bit. Lot of things that we do or say to them we don't advertise. Lot of things said behind the scenes. One of those things where we trust our coaches. Bobby is one of the best infield coaches around. They'll settle in. It's one of those things you really evaluate over a couple of weeks. Usually a week or two."
"Timmy is 28 going on 29 but Renato is 24. There are some good things. Try to look at the positive on things and realize that it's about putting us in a position to make good decisions on what we have and what we don't have."
Showalter was asked about teaching players after they've reached the major league level. Will the Orioles have to do more of that moving forward as they begin to add younger talent?
"The important thing is to get to know them and trust what the people that have had them in Norfolk and Bowie are telling you. And create a good atmosphere for those skills to come out. It's hard game to play, especially if anxiety is being created by the environment," Showalter said.
The Orioles currently have four starting pitchers and nine in the bullpen on the roster. They are expected to drop a bullpen arm when right-hander Andrew Cashner gets activated off the DL to start here Sunday.
The Orioles are playing with a three-man bench right now.
"In a perfect world you wouldn't (have just three)," Showalter said. "But I think today's game just about dictates that you do, until everybody kind of gets going again in the second-half. Depends on where we are personnel-wise when this trading deadline is over too, quite frankly. There is a lot of moving parts here, I'm trying to keep that in mind."
Showalter talked again today about the possibility of seeing two of three players currently in his clubhouse traded by the end of this month.
"It's reality. We've had such a great connection with some really great times here. But we're preparing for some great times in the future. Especially with a club in our situation things are cyclical. And you have to prepare yourself to be good enough to have another good cycle. And you ride it as long as you. I'll stand accused, all of us, of trying to see if we could another year out of that cycle."
Jones drives home the first run: Adam Jones' RBI single in the first scored Beckham, who had also singled and provided the Orioles the early 1-0 lead. Alex Cobb fanned three through three innings and holds the one-run lead at Rogers Centre.
Toronto takes the lead: The O's fell behind 3-1 in the Blue Jays fourth and again contributed to their own problems. Cobb walked the leadoff batter Justin Smoak after being ahead 0-2 in the count and then when Yangervis Solarte hit a comeback his throw to second pulled shortstop Beckham off the bag. Beckham got an error on a FC-E6 and Toronto turned that into a three-run inning with a Randall Grichuk RBI double, a Luke Maile RBI single and another run scoring on a double play grounder.
Balk scores one: We don't often see a balk score a run but it happened in the Toronto fifth. Teoscar Hernández doubled, moved up on a fly out and scored on Cobb's balk as the Jays added to their lead and it's 4-1.
