Stewart headed to injured list

ARLINGTON, Texas - The Orioles are placing outfielder DJ Stewart on the 10-day injured list pending doctor approval, which is expected to come shortly.

Stevie Wilkerson reported to Globe Life Park as the corresponding roster move. He's allowed to return prior to the minimum 10-day requirement because he's replacing an injured player.

The Orioles were hoping that Stewart would be day-to-day, but the ankle swelled overnight and it's heavily taped this afternoon. Stewart was limping to his locker.

Second baseman Jonathan Villar said he could be ready to get back in the lineup in a day or two after injuring his right thumb last night while sliding into second base in the fourth inning. He appears to have avoided a trip to the IL.

Manager Brandon Hyde said Villar could be available tonight for defense or to pinch-run.

Catcher Pedro Severino said he should return to the lineup Friday night in Houston after passing concussion tests last night. Severino was hit on the mask by a foul ball.

The lineup hasn't been posted, but Chris Davis will be in right field tonight for the first time since Aug. 21, 2016 versus the Astros at Camden Yards. Trey Mancini is the designated hitter due to a sore left foot.

Mancini was hit on the foot last night and also fouled a ball of it. He's a little banged up.

Renato Núñez is playing first base.

Davis made three starts in right field in 2016, 24 in 2015 and 17 in 2012.

The off-day on Monday allowed Hyde to tweak his rotation and move up David Hess for tonight's start while pushing back Andrew Cashner to Saturday in Houston. Cashner is dealing with some leg soreness.

Hess continues to lead the majors with 19 home runs allowed. He's made only one career start against the Rangers and it didn't go well, with five earned runs (seven total) and six hits surrendered in 3 1/3 innings at Globe Life Park.

Ariel Jurado is making his 13th appearance this season but only his fourth start. He's allowed eight earned runs (15 total) over 29 2/3 innings.

Jurado's last two starts have been quality outings with four runs allowed in 12 1/3 innings. Left-handers are hitting .200/.267/.255 against him this season and right-handers are hitting .279/.313/.492.

The Orioles faced Jurado on Aug. 3, 2018 in Texas and he allowed two runs in five innings.
