Last night, the Chicago White Sox began their assault on Orioles starter Chris Tillman in the first inning by stringing together a single, home run, double, double and double.
Tillman was behind, 4-0, before recording his first out.
One night later, Orioles starter Alfredo Simon retired the first Detroit Tigers batter he faced before issuing a walk and allowing three consecutive singles.
Fortunately for Simon, the Tigers managed only one run, on Miguel Cabrera's single into left field. Victor Martinez followed with a single that loaded the bases, but Jhonny Peralta bounced into a 5-3 double play.
Simon threw 20 pitches, 10 for strikes. His last pitch, a fastball, registered 95 mph on the stadium's radar gun.
Instant update: Nolan Reimold walked to lead off the bottom of the first, and J.J. Hardy hit his 22nd home run, breaking a tie with Adam Jones.
Orioles 2, Tigers 1.
Hardy's ball traveled an estimated 370 feet.
Update II: The Tigers scored again in the second inning to tie the game, 2-2. Simon has already thrown 55 pitches.
