TORONTO – Orioles reliever Albert Suárez went on the 15-day injured list this afternoon with right shoulder inflammation, a move that’s backdated to yesterday.
Matt Bowman’s contract was selected from Triple-A Norfolk. He’s wearing No. 51.
The 40-man roster is full.
Suárez allowed one earned run and two total with five hits in 2 2/3 innings Friday night, and his fastball velocity was about two mph lower than his average in 2024. Bowman gives the bullpen a fresh arm and one capable of providing length.
The Orioles selected Bowman’s contract last Sunday on his opt-out date, designated him for assignment before Opening Day and outrighted him to Norfolk. He made 15 appearances with the Orioles last season and posted a 3.45 ERA in 15 2/3 innings.
Tomoyuki Sugano is making his major league debut today at age 35, as the Orioles try to win the season’s first series.
Jordan Westburg is taking his turn to rest this afternoon after hitting three home runs in three games. Jackson Holliday is at second base and Ramón Urías is at third.
Jorge Mateo is the shortstop. Colton Cowser remains the leadoff hitter. Tyler O’Neill returns to right field.
The Blue Jays are starting right-hander Chris Bassitt, who had a 4.16 ERA last season in 31 starts. His 16 hit batters tied for most in the American League.
Bassitt has made eight career starts against the Orioles and posted a 5.01 ERA in 46 2/3 innings. Ryan O’Hearn is 5-for-11 with a home run. O’Neill is 1-for-14 with a double.

The Yankees broke out their torpedo bats in yesterday’s 20-9 demolition of the Brewers, hitting a franchise record nine home runs, including three on the first three pitches from Nestor Cortes. Some of their players are carrying lumber to the plate that’s designed with more wood behind the label.
“I think it’s pretty good business right there, right? Where you hit the ball, put some more mass in the sweet spot,” said Orioles hitting coach Cody Asche.
“I think that’s not something that’s unique to the Yankees. I think a lot of teams are doing that around the league. They may have some more players who have adopted it at a higher rate, but I think if you were around clubhouses of all 30 teams, you’d see a guy or two that’s kind of adopting a bat that’s fashioned more specifically to their swing. I think that’s probably the next progression in hitting, finding out where you hit the ball in the sweet spot, putting more mass there without changing too many things.
“We have some guys who have dabbled with it for sure. We have people working on it behind the scenes as well.”
