Orioles right-hander Dylan Bundy gave up a season high in homers while also recording his shortest start of 2017. It was not a good combination for him or the Orioles today.
Pitching on six day's rest, Bundy allowed seven hits and five runs over four frames, as the Rays hammered the Orioles 10-3 at Camden Yards.
When this series began, the Orioles were 10-3 at home versus the Rays since the start of last season. Now they've dropped the first two in this series. On Sunday, the Rays go for their first three-game sweep in Baltimore since May 17-19, 2013.
Bundy had given up three runs total in the first inning all year, but today Tampa Bay came out swinging for a three-run first that included Evan Longoria's hit-and-run single, scoring Mallex Smith from first base, and Logan Morrison's 435-foot two-run homer. The first five batters today produced exit velocities between 97 and 108 mph off the O's right-hander.
Leading 3-1, the Rays got back-to-back solo homers in the third by Morrison and Steven Souza Jr. Morrison's blast went 422 feet onto Eutaw Street and Souza's went 433 to center.
This was the 11th time this season the Rays went back-to-back and the last two have come versus Bundy. Morrison has a career-high 24 homers and produced his sixth career multi-homer game.
In his last three starts, Bundy has pitched 4 1/3, seven and four innings. In those combined 15 1/3 innings, he has allowed six homers and 14 runs. He falls to 8-7 with an ERA of 4.02, which is the worst mark of the year for Bundy.
O's starters have just four quality starts over the last 25 games with a rotation ERA of 8.18 in that span. O's pitchers have allowed 10 or more runs in seven of the last 21 games and 11 times for the season.
In the fifth, Wilson Ramos hit a three-run shot off Alec Asher for Tampa Bay's fourth homer. The Rays began today tied for second in the major leagues in team homers. They have hit 23 in the last 12 games. Tampa Bay added two more runs in the sixth.
Craig Gentry's RBI single off Rays starter and winner Jake Odorizzi got the O's on the board in the second. Jonathan Schoop hit a two-run homer to center in the fifth. Schoop hit No. 16 a distance of 420 feet and he now has 51 RBIs.
The Orioles are 39-41 one game before the season's exact midpoint. They have lost 25 of the last 39 games and fall to 24-16 at home and to 25-20 in division games.
In Sunday's series finale, right-hander Kevin Gausman (4-7, 6.07 ERA) pitches against right-hander Alex Cobb (6-5, 3.73 ERA).
Postgame quotes:
Bundy on his outing: "Longball got me in trouble today. Pitches right down the middle. Pitches that were up in the zone they were able to hammer. So tough game plan. They came out swinging the bats early and tried to manage it, but wasn't able to today."
Bundy on pitching on six day's rest: "Yeah, I mean I just have to alter my routine every five days, but that's fine. I know when I'm going to start and that's just another excuse if I'm going to use it. Extra rest is always a good thing. You never really complain about a day of rest."
Bundy asked if he was too strong today: "I mean, there are all kinds of variables that could have went into that. But I felt great out there and that's the main thing. I was executing pitches and then left a few pitches up. That's what they'll do up here is hammer them."
Trey Mancini on the offense today: "We made him (Odorizzi) throw a lot of pitches. Over a hundred pitches in five innings. So we did a good job of getting on base, but just couldn't capitalize in some of those situations. I got a lot of cutters last time, and today he stayed more true fastball and slider. I came in wanting to attack the cutter and maybe I got caught in between on some, I think and maybe that happened to some of the other guys as well. We couldn't get the big hit to break things open."
