NEW YORK - The Orioles aren't done bringing up their top prospects over the final weeks of the season.
Left-hander Tanner Scott is expected to join the club in New York this weekend, according to an industry source. Scott would join catcher Chance Sisco and outfielder Austin Hays as additions to the expanded roster.
Scott, 23, went 0-2 with a 2.22 ERA in 24 starts at Double-A Bowie, with 17 runs and 45 hits in 69 innings. He walked 46 batters and struck out 87, and opponents batted .188 against him.
The Orioles moved Scott into a starting role this year, but were careful with his innings, using another starter to piggyback off him. He worked 3 2/3 innings on July 17 in his longest stretch.
Control has been an issue with Scott, who walked 57 batters in 64 1/3 innings last season between Single-A Frederick and Bowie.
Armed with a fastball that touches triple digits, Scott has worked to refine his secondary pitches and impressed the organization and scouts this summer with an improved slider.
Scott is 10-14 with a 3.85 ERA in 95 games over four minor league seasons since the Orioles chose him in the sixth round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of Howard College in Texas. He's surrendered only three home runs in 198 2/3 innings.
MLBPipeline.com rates Scott, who pitched in the All-Star Futures Game in July, as the No. 6 prospect in the organization. Baseball America tabbed him as the 11th-best prospect at the conclusion of the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
A corresponding 40-man roster move will be necessary to accommodate Scott, who would have needed to be protected this winter in the Rule 5 draft.
