The 2014 Orioles: While they lose players to injury, they add to their division lead

Call it an Adam bomb.

Whenever the 2014 season comes to an end and someone compiles a list of Adam Jones' greatest hits, last night's homer will be there. It's going to be a long list for Jones with key hits and this homer will rank right up there.

jones-white-home-run-fist-bump-sidebar.jpgHe has had so many big first-inning homers this year, but this time he saved the best for last. Jones' three-run homer in the eighth inning broke a 2-2 tie and sent the Orioles on their way to a stirring 5-3 win over the Yankees that sent 37,587 fans at Camden Yards into a frenzy.

Nelson Cruz talked about the impressive comeback win.

"Amazing. Shows a lot of character," he said. "Every day there is a new hero. It is unbelievable the way we are playing the last month and a half."

Jonathan Schoop's solo homer off Dellin Betances tied the game at 2-2 in the eighth and set the stage for Jones. Cruz gave props to both the kid and the veteran for their longballs in the eighth.

"He's a young guy with a lot of talent," Cruz said of Schoop. "No doubt he can hit the best pitchers in the league. Jones is a leader. Today he showed the player that he is."

And the Orioles showed the team that they are.

Fall behind 2-0. Get no-hit for four innings. Play without Manny Machado. Play without J.J. Hardy. Play without Matt Wieters. Nothing seems to get this team down.

The Orioles were 3-39 when trailing after seven innings, but their two-homer, four-run rally added a fourth win to that stat.

The postgame quotes were almost as good as the home runs.

Schoop told reporters that he pretty much called his shot in the dugout before his homer. He said he told Manny Machado, "I might go deep on this guy."

"I just believed in myself there. I said, 'I'm going to do something special.' I was talking to Manny and I achieved it," Schoop said.

Jones said: "Try to rise to every occasion. Put me in the right spot, I'm expecting to deliver."

In nine 2014 games against the Yankees, Schoop is batting .379 (11-for-29) with four homers, 11 RBIs, an .862 slugging percentage and a 1.262 OPS. The kid is a Yankee killer.

He has homered twice off New York's Masahiro Tanaka, while also connecting off Betances and Chase Whitley. Schoop homered in both games in this series. This is the first time in his career he's homered in back-to-back games.

In 11 games against New York, Jones is batting .348 (16-for-46) with three homers, nine RBIs, a .609 slugging percentage and a .984 OPS.

In going 8-3 this year against the Yankees, the Orioles have outscored New York nearly 2-to-1, plating 60 runs to the Yankees' 31.

For the season, the Orioles have a plus-58 run differential and half of that at plus-29 has come against the Yankees.

The Orioles are playing .580 ball at 69-50 and they now lead the American League East by 7 1/2 games on Toronto and by eight games on New York. At a time when those teams have played pretty well since the All-Star break, the Orioles are still pulling away from them.

The Orioles lose players, but increase their division lead.

Cue the "Orioles Magic" song.
