The final day to sign draft picks is here and O's are still expected to get Bundy

As the final day to sign 2011 draft pick begins, the Orioles are still seeking their three main targets: first-round pick Dylan Bundy, second-round pick Jason Esposito and sixth-round selection, Nicky Delmonico. According to Baseball America's Jim Callis, in a tweet filed early this morning, the Orioles signed Arizona high school right-handed pitcher Zach Davies. The 26th-round pick got a reported $575,000 bonus. The Orioles have been very confident that they would get Bundy signed since the minute they selected him. As of last night, that opinion had not changed. It may not happen until very late tonight, but it would be a huge surprise if this deal does not get done. If the Orioles get the big three of Bundy, Esposito and Delmonico all signed, it could take more than the Orioles spent on the entire draft in 2010, which was around $9.2 million. Bundy's numbers this past season at Owassa High in Oklahoma were amazing: He went 11-0 with an ERA of 0.20. In 71 innings he gave up just 20 hits and five walks and struck out 158 batters. His fastball sat between 94-97 and touched 100 several times. He also has three solid pitches in a curve, cutter and changeup. His older brother, Bobby, the Orioles' eighth-round pick in 2008, is 12-6 this year with a 2.81 ERA in 22 starts between Single-A Frederick and Double-A Bowie. Dylan told Orioles scouting director Joe Jordan he dreams of a day where he can pitch in the same major league rotation for the Orioles with his brother. If there is a scout or analyst out there that doesn't rave about Bundy, I haven't found him - and he probably doesn't exist. Here is what Baseball America's Callis told me about Bundy back in June when the Orioles took him with the fourth overall pick: "You could argue that they got perhaps the best player in the draft. If not the best player, they at least got the best pitcher in Dylan Bundy. I know there was some talk they might go for Archie Bradley because Bundy had a $30 million price tag and they were possibly going to go with Bradley. "But in the end they got Bundy. In a draft with tremendous depth in college pitching, I kept having scouts tell me that Bundy might be better than all the college arms including Gerrit Cole who went No. 1. "I don't know what you could want Bundy to do better. He has stuff and not just the fastball, a good breaking pitch and advanced changeup. He's got command, athleticism and an easy, balanced delivery. His work ethic is off the charts. I don't know what more you could want him to do. He's one of those guys that could make a draft all by himself."
