The good part of Chavez's season

Endy Chavez saved a run in the bottom of the first inning today, and for a team that's been so bad defensively, it's worth pointing out and embracing and asking for a second date. Chavez broke back for the fence and made a running, backhanded catch to rob Albert Pujols with one out and a runner on second base. This isn't an usual occurrence for Chavez. I've seen him race into the gap and to the line to make outstanding catches. He's a plus-defender, which makes him a solid fourth outfielder. He's also batting .120, which makes him a disappointment at the plate. But he does serve a purpose on this team, and anyone who can flash that kind of leather shouldn't be ignored. Wilson Betemit made a barehanded pickup and throw to retire the speedy Peter Bourjos and end the second inning. Wei-Yin Chen has allowed two hits and walked a batter in two innings, but he hasn't permitted a run and his pitch count stands at 30 because ... wait for it ... the defense is bailing him out.
