Tillman wins 14th, Schoop drives in two as O's end losing streak

The Orioles had a few at-bats in their series at New York where the clutch hits didn't come, so Jonathan Schoop's at-bat in the seventh inning today was a nice change.

Clinging to a one-run lead over CC Sabathia and the Yankees, the Orioles' second baseman delivered a key two-out, two-run double. It provided the Orioles a three-run lead and they went on to beat the Yankees 4-1 this afternoon.

O's right-hander Chris Tillman pitched yet another strong game today and became a 14-game winner. That ties Chicago's Chris Sale for the American League lead.

The Orioles had scored only four total runs during a four-game losing streak they snapped this afternoon. They went 3-4 on this road trip and head home at 54-40.

The Orioles were 1-for-5 with runners in scoring postion today and 4-for-38 on the road trip when Schoop's double made it 4-1. It scored Caleb Joseph and Julio Borbon, who singled. For Borbon, that was his first hit in the majors since Aug. 2, 2013.

Tillman went seven innings allowing one run for the fourth straight start. He is 4-0 with a 1.29 ERA in that span. He improved to 14-2 with an ERA of 3.18 for the season, allowing four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Tillman, who threw 102 pitches, retired 16 of the last 17 batters he faced.

O's pitchers have worked seven innings or more 18 times this season. Tillman has done that nine times and no one else has done that more than twice. Tillman has pitched seven or more four straight games and six times his past nine starts.

The Orioles are now 18-3 in his 21 starts this year. Tillman has made 10 starts this year versus the AL East and the Orioles are 10-0.

With two runs in the top of the first today, the Orioles matched their run total of the previous three games in the series. Schoop reached on an infield single with one out and went to third on Manny Machado's single. Chris Davis walked with two outs to load the bases. Then J.J. Hardy drilled a two-run single off the glove of shortstop Didi Gregorius.

The Yankees cut the 2-0 deficit to 2-1 in the second. Gregorius led off with a double, advanced to third on a fly out and scored on Starlin Castro's single.

But Schoop's double provided insurance runs and the O's late-inning relief protected the lead for Tillman. Brad Brach pitched a scoreless eighth and Zach Britton a 1-2-3 ninth to record his 30th save in 30 chances. It was Britton's 103rd career save.

Now the O's return to Baltimore for a six-game homestand that starts Friday night against Cleveland. Dylan Bundy (2-2, 3.70 ERA) pitches against Trevor Bauer (7-3, 3.36 ERA).
