Trumbo leaning toward surgery on right knee

Mark Trumbo hasn't made a final decision on whether to undergo surgery on his right knee. However, he's likely to have it done following another appointment next week.

Trumbo is flying to Northern California for his latest examination on Wednesday. He's already undergone an MRI and received opinions for Dr. James Andrews and team orthopedic surgeon Dr. Leigh Ann Curl.

"I don't have anything totally conclusive," Trumbo said after returning to his locker this afternoon and finding a small media contingent approaching him.

"Going to speak to a few people today, going to speak with a few people - I'm going to travel to Northern California on Wednesday - and receive a few additional inputs before I decide what exactly makes the most sense."

"I think at this point it's probably the best option," he said, "but I haven't obviously made that decision completely. Going to seek some opinions and I'll have a final decision."

Trumbo hasn't received another injection in the knee, but he underwent an MRI "and then everyone's kind of taken a look," he said.

"Dr. Andrews took a look. He gave Brian (Ebel) some feedback. And there's quite a few different ideas, so ultimately it will be up to me to decide which is best for the short-term and the long-term. So, we'll see."

Manager Buck Showalter is waiting for the next move and is supportive of any outcome.

"He's gathering opinions from our people and some of the best, most experienced people with this in the country," Showalter said. "He'll make a good, education decision on what course of action. I'm obviously not going to tell everything that I may or may not know, but I don't think Mark's fully decided. He wants to make sure that he takes the right course of action.

"Really, the two or three opportunities or ways he can go, I think they're all going to end up in a good place. But he's going to make sure he gets all the information. If you know Mark and Brian and our doctors, that's kind of what they do."

Showalter hasn't dismissed the possibility of Trumbo playing again this season, but the knee's barked periodically since May.

"I'm not going there yet," he said. "I know what the handicap is on it, but until he decides what course of action, there's one that could (bring) the potential of him playing a little bit. We'll see what he choose and we'll support him with it.

"It's not an exact science. There's some unknown with it. You go through similar situations and similar characteristics of what he's got going on, but until you get in there sometimes, you're not 100 percent sure. As much as they MRI and do all his imaging, there's still some unknown."

Trumbo has one year remaining on his contract and the ultimate goal is having him full-go for spring training and the 2019 season.

"I don't know what other course of action at this point in the season you'd want to take," Showalter said. "I've got a pretty good feeling from talking to Mark and talking to doctors where it will probably end up, but it's kind of in Mark's hands and whatever he chooses we'll support."

Jimmy Yacabonis will be recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday and start one game of the doubleheader as the 26th man. He's expected at Camden Yards later this afternoon.
