Trumbo removed from rehab assignment (and other notes)

Mark Trumbo is in the Orioles' clubhouse this afternoon and the Orioles have halted his rehab assignment with Double-A Bowie.

Manager Buck Showalter said Trumbo didn't experience a setback. This is done more as a precaution.

"Just talking with him and the trainers, he's at 36 days and he's actually a little ahead of things, so we're going to slow that down a little bit," Showalter said.

"He just felt like last night, he just didn't feel like pushing it. Thought he still wasn't comfortable with that and I'm proud that he felt comfortable telling us that, because you don't want that setback that pushes it way back."

Trumbo served as the designated hitter last night at Bowie and went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts. He'll accompany the Orioles to Boston and work out with the club before a decision is made on his next assignment.

Complicating Trumbo's night at Bowie was Erie starter Josh Turley, a left-handed knuckleball pitcher.

Hunter Harvey, optioned this afternoon, will start for Bowie on Saturday in Harrisburg. He may be limited to two innings instead of three because he hasn't pitched in two weeks. He did, however, have a prolonged workday this afternoon.

Infielder Engelb Vielma's arrival gives the Orioles a four-man bench. Showalter and executive vice president Dan Duquette discussed the various options late last night.

Showalter warned that, while he'd keep four reserves "in a perfect world," he'll always err on the side of protecting the bullpen and keeping pitchers healthy.

The MRI on outfielder Colby Rasmus' left hip came back with a "good" result. Exactly what the Orioles were anticipating, though they're still determining the timetable for his return.

The original diagnosis had him out five-to-eight days.

Caleb Joseph is out of the lineup for a second straight night, but he's going to catch all four games in Boston. The Red Sox are starting four left-handers.

Alex Cobb threw his bullpen session today at Bowie, with pitching coach Roger McDowell keeping close watch, and he's still scheduled to make his Orioles debut Saturday afternoon in Boston. He's going to join the club on Thursday.

"That went well," Showalter said.
