Trumbo to rehab at Bowie, Mancini's knee better (O's down 4-3)

Mark Trumbo is headed to Double-A Bowie to restart his injury rehab assignment.

Trumbo will play for the Baysox in a three-game series against Richmond that begins Monday, most likely in the field the first two nights before serving as the designated hitter in the afternoon finale.

The plan also calls for Trumbo to work out on Thursday and join Triple-A Norfolk for three games in Charlotte.

Trumbo has been on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right quadriceps muscle. He played for Bowie on April 10, going 0-for-3 with a walk, before the Orioles removed him from the assignment.

Asked whether Trumbo will be withheld from playing on the current 10-game homestand, manager Buck Showalter said, "I'm not going to really paint myself or ourselves or Mark most importantly in a corner about this day, then all of a sudden, 'What happened? You said this, you said that.'

"He's going to play three games in Bowie. I know that for sure. And the schedule calls for him to play three more with Norfolk. There's some chances he'll need more than that. This guy hasn't had a spring training, you know? And that requires him being OK from a physical standpoint."

Trumbo could return to Camden Yards for Thursday's workout and push to come off the disabled list, but he's remained patient throughout the process.

"I think he's handling it very maturely," Showalter said. "I think he knows it's important to get it right the first time. Plus, he needs some at-bats."

Trumbo received 23 of them in the Grapefruit League before the Orioles shut him down.

Trey Mancini said his right knee is feeling much better this morning. He couldn't bend it yesterday, but he walked on a treadmill today and is encouraged by his recovery.

"Trey is better," Showalter said. "I think that's heading in the right direction. We had that quick turnaround, didn't expect him to be (ready), then 1 o'clock today. But he's trending in the right direction."

Showalter isn't ready to commit to a return date for Mancini, who needed sutures in his right knee Friday night after sliding into the brick wall in foul territory.

"I know in my gut where I think he'll end up, but let's see if it's better than that," Showalter said. "He's still sore, but he's moving. He got lucky. His kneecap, he got lucky."

Zach Britton threw off a half-mound again today after yesterday's fielding drills.

"That went well," Showalter said.

Cody Sedlock, the Orioles' first-round pick in 2016, underwent an MRI on his right shoulder yesterday afternoon that didn't reveal any structural damage. However, he's expected to receive an injection.

Sedlock is on Single-A Frederick's disabled list with a strained shoulder.

"There's no major issues there that I'm aware of," Showalter said. "Things have checked out pretty well all things considered."

Jimmy Yacabonis pitched five scoreless innings last night for Norfolk, allowing two hits, walking one batter and striking out three. He threw 63 pitches, 41 for strikes, as the Orioles gradually stretch him out as a starter.

"That was good to see," Showalter said. "I got in this morning and Roger (McDowell) was in there watching the game. His split times. He had gotten real slow to the plate, but he was 1.2. He was really good. That was a good outing on a whole lot of fronts. It was interesting."

Update: Zimmer has been scratched with a mild right ankle sprain. Rajai Davis is starting in center field and batting ninth.

Update II: Manny Machado homered with two outs in the first inning, his seventh this season, to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead.

Update III: Jose Ramirez homered onto the flag court to lead off the top of the fourth inning and tie the score 1-1.

Update IV: Back-to-back doubles by Edwin Encarnacion and Yonder Alonso later in the fourth gave Cleveland a 2-1 lead.

Update V: Machado homered again in the fourth, his third multi-homer game of the season and 17th of his career. Orioles 2, Indians 2

Update VI: The Orioles took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on Chris Davis' single that scored Adam Jones, who doubled with one out, but the Indians scored twice in the top of the fifth. Andrew Cashner walked two batters in the inning and threw a wild pitch. He's up to 96 pitches in five frames.
