Turner and Giolito shine in U.S. All-Stars' 10-1 rout at Futures Game

U.S. Futures All-Stars blasted the Worlds Futures All-Stars 10-1 at the SiriusXM Futures Game Sunday. Nationals prospect Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber and Josh Bell each contributed two RBIs, and the U.S. tallied five runs early and then five more runs in the sixth inning to put the game away.

Turner went 2-for-2 with the two RBIs, including a double. But his biggest highlight might have come before the game began.

J.J. Cooper, managing editor of Baseball America, was there and explained:

trea-turner-usa-sidebar.jpg"When Trea Turner was coming into the draft last year, some scouts questioned his bat," Cooper said. "His swing is a lot smoother now and you don't really hear those questions anymore. We saw that again on Sunday as Turner got to show his easy gap power and his excellent speed. He even put one in the second deck in the pregame batting practice to show off his surprising pop."

Nationals top prospect Lucas Giolito started the game and allowed only two hit and no runs in two innings with no walks and one strikeout. Cooper said everyone got an early look of Giolito's repertoire, but left wanting more. However in the All-Star format, they had to let other pitchers pitch, too.

"Lucas Giolito got the chance to work in a more normal role than most of his Futures Game since he was starting and worked two innings instead of the one that everyone else got," Cooper said. "We saw the fastball, we saw the breaking ball. It wasn't really the full Lucas Giolito experience that you would see over a full start, but as he showed last year, there's a lot to like about Giolito's stuff."

All in all, a very impressive performance by both prospects, and a demonstration that each is legit and the Nationals have two of the best available in the game.
