SAN FRANCISCO - Tyler Wilson is in the Orioles' clubhouse tonight after being placed on the 24-hour taxi squad.
Wilson will return to Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday if not recalled.
Manager Buck Showalter will provide an explanation later. Wilson could be here in case reliever Darren O'Day or infielder Steve Pearce go on the disabled list.
Showalter said yesterday that he would check on O'Day to make sure the reliever's right hamstring isn't bothering him again. Pearce hasn't played since receiving a cortisone injection in his right forearm Sunday in Chicago.
The Tides were off yesterday, allowing Wilson to dine with his family. The meal was interrupted by a phone call from the Orioles.
"I was fortunate to have a chance to spend some time with my wife and in-laws, but I got a call in the middle of dinner and got on a flight this morning, got here about 3 o'clock today," he said.
"It was explained as a phone call and you need to get on a plane and get out here, and that's all I really know. Just like always, go where they tell me to go and take the ball when they give it to me."
The Orioles optioned Wilson before the break and shut him down to freshen up his arm. He's allowed one earned run over 10 innings in his last two starts, with no walks and nine strikeouts. He threw five hitless innings Aug. 3 in Durham.
Wilson was 4-6 with a 4.98 ERA in 17 games (13 starts) with the Orioles before they sent him down on July 3. They've gradually increased his pitch count at Norfolk.
"I feel great," said Wilson, who made his last start on Tuesday. "Physically I feel real strong. My arm feels great and each outing I've gone out there just trying to work on something, get better, but most importantly just compete and not worry too much about pitch count or whatever could come on any given day. But just really try to keep those competitive juices flowing and be ready for when that call does come."
Wilson is used to showing up on short notice.
"It's happened quite a bit now, I guess," he said. "That phone call never gets old, so it's always great to be here and obviously be part of the great things this team is doing. We're in a good place right now as a team and I'm just happy to be here to be a part of it."
The Orioles are wearing their black jerseys tonight while the Giants wear orange. The Orioles will break out the orange jerseys on Saturday.
