Trey Mancini completed his rounds of batting practice this afternoon, walked back inside the clubhouse and stayed in the lineup.
At least, as the Orioles left the field and the Twins began infield drills.
Manager Brandon Hyde planned on starting Mancini, who missed the past three games with bruised ribs, but there was a final test.
“He feels better,” Hyde said before heading outdoors. “He’s going to take batting practice, which starts here in about 20 minutes, and then we’re going to kind of go from there.
“He wants to be in there, he’s going to give it every effort, like the gamer he is, to try to be in there. But we’re still going to evaluate him after BP.”
Check back for any changes.
Pitcher Chris Ellis left the team and is having his right shoulder examined in Texas.
Ellis is on the injured list with inflammation in the shoulder. He’s undergone tests in Baltimore and must be seeking another opinion.
“I should have more probably tomorrow,” Hyde said.
The discomfort forced Ellis out of an April 24 start in Anaheim after he faced five batters and retired none. A similar injury ended his season last September, and the Orioles re-signed him to a minor league deal in March.
Outfielder Anthony Santander took grounders at first base during batting practice, before he stepped inside the cage for his own swings.
Santander handled just about every ball, failing on one backhand attempt. He smiled as he walked through the dugout on his way to grab a bat, saying it was just “practice.”
Don’t expect Santander to be making immediate starts at first.
Bruce Zimmermann takes a 0.93 ERA into tonight’s game, the second-lowest among pitchers with a minimum of 19 innings. Seattle’s Logan Gilbert has a 0.64 ERA.
The Twins still list their Thursday starter as TBA. Kyle Bradish opposes former Oriole Dylan Bundy on Wednesday, and Spenser Watkins closes out the series.
