Updates on Morse and the coaching staff

Outfielder/first baseman Michael Morse, acquired by the Orioles in an Aug. 30 trade with the Mariners, is expected to undergo surgery on his left wrist after receiving a second opinion at the Mayo Clinic. Morse didn't play after Sept. 22 because of the injury, which he didn't reveal to the Orioles under the final week of the season. He went 3-for-29 with no extra-base hits after the trade. Morse is a pending free agent and the Orioles aren't saying much about the examination, which followed a visit to Sarasota hand specialist Dr. Brian Schofield. However, executive vice president Dan Duquette said the injury most likely existed prior to the trade, which sent Triple-A Norfolk outfielder Xavier Avery to the Mariners in exchange for Morse. "He's got a couple of issues with the wrist that need to be addressed," Duquette said while confirming the probability of surgery. Morse was in a 3-for-34 slump with the Mariners when the Orioles acquired him. He batted .215/.270/.381 with 13 doubles, 13 homers and 27 RBIs in 88 games. "I think if you look at the history, he had a couple things going on there and wasn't able to perform when we got him," Duquette said. "I think the wrist issues probably predated him joining the team." Duquette added that Morse was deemed healthy and playing for Seattle at the time of the trade - he had missed five weeks with a quadriceps injury - and "I'm not sure there's any recourse for the team. There could be, but it's not an issue we're pursuing." When it was pointed out that Morse could be a bargain on the free agent market this winter, Duquette replied, "I guess so. We'll have to wait and see." Also, the Orioles are hoping to announce their coaching staff by the end of the month. Other teams already have done so, with a few of them making changes. The Orioles, meanwhile, are determining whether Rick Adair will remain pitching coach next season, with Bill Castro returning to his previous role of bullpen coach. Adair took a personal leave of absence on Aug. 15, in part to deal with the illness of his father, who passed away the following month. Castro was named acting pitching coach, with Scott McGregor moving to the bullpen. Adair is signed through the 2014 season. The same is true of hitting coach Jim Presley, who will return next season, along with bench coach John Russell, third base coach Bobby Dickerson, first base coach Wayne Kirby and extra coach Einar Diaz. "We're working on the coaching staff this week and next," Duquette said. "We're going to discuss and explore the pitching coaches so we can get the best combination for the team. That's being discussed. "We haven't committed to next year with any of our (major league) pitching coaches. We're reviewing that and will take a look at what we can do to make that the strongest."
