Updates on young outfielders Quintana, Marte and De La Rosa

Here is a rundown of some of the outfielders that got in significant work during fall instructional league, which wrapped up last week in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Nationals assistant general manager of player development Mark Scialabba detailed the play of three outfielders from the roster that worked out in October at the spring training facility.

"There is really a group of three young Latin American outfielders that had really good camps," Scialabba said. "Roismar Quintana was set back a little bit with a leg strain, but he finished up healthy and strong towards the end of camp. Quintana, Daniel Marte and Jeremy De La Rosa all have potential to be everyday players.

Quintana, a Venezuelan, signed in 2019 for a reported $820,000 bonus and was ranked as the No. 16 international prospect at the time. Quintana is listed as the No. 15 Nats prospect and Scialabba said the 17-year-old has a lot of plus tools, including the ability to play center field.

"Roismar, from the right, side has feel to hit. Very, very powerful right-handed hitter with ability to drive the ball to right-center," Scialabba said. "He stays inside the ball extremely well. In the short stints that he has over here in the states, he really has shown a knack to hit. He's very hitterish. He gets in the box and understands what the pitcher is trying to do. Not afraid to hit the ball to right field, but he's got power there, too. So he knows it's a strength of his.

"He has a very quick bat, stays short down through the baseball and is in the hitting zone for a long time. We are high on him. In the outfield, he is someone that can play center, but profiles more towards right field down the road. He's someone that has that physical, powerful frame that you want in the middle-of-the-order impact bat."

Marte, 18, is ranked as the Nats No. 21 prospect. He played in 55 games in 2019 for the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League Nationals.

"Daniel Marte is another right-handed hitter," Scialabba said. "Strong kid with a plus arm. He is a plus runner as well. Has the tools to play in center field. He's another one that had a kind of breakout instructional league. He had two homers to left field where the ball exploded off his bat. He's quick coming down through the baseball. Has a good idea on a plan to hit right now. He is continuing to be a work in progress with plate discipline, but that's normal for an 18-year-old in the professional game. But we are very excited about both those guys."

The Nats have had good things to say about De La Rosa for a while now. The 18-year-old is the highest-rated of the trio, ranked as the No. 13 Nats prospect. He played in 26 games for the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Nationals in 2019.

"Jeremy, we have talked a lot about," Scialabba said. "Very balanced stroke from the left side plus bat speed. Has the frame to probably put on a little bit more muscle, but he's athletic now, can play center. We are very high on the bat there."

Other outfielders on the roster that got time and played in games at instructional league include Andry Arias, Gage Canning, Justin Connell, Braian Fernandez, Jorge Hurtado, Ricardo Mendez, Jake Randa and Cody Wilson. Canning played in 2019 for high Single-A Potomac and low Single-A Hagerstown, while Connell, Mendez and Wilson played for Hagerstown.
