Updating All-Star voting and Pena's arrival in Baltimore

Yovani Gallardo remains scheduled to start the first game of Thursday's doubleheader at Single-A Frederick, with catching prospect Jonah Heim behind the plate.

The Orioles plan on keeping Gallardo on his injury rehab assignment for at least two starts.

The first round of All-Star Game voting was released today and Manny Machado leads all American League third basemen with 630,028 votes. The Royals' Mike Moustakas, out for the season with a torn ACL, is second with 566,278 votes.

Mark Trumbo ranks third among outfielders with 641,594 votes, trailing the Angels' Mike Trout (934,137) and the Royals' Lorenzo Cain (647,339). The Red Sox's Jackie Bradley, Jr. is fourth with 554,887.

Adam Jones is ninth with 263,579.

Chris Davis is third among first basemen with 387,876, while the Royals' Eric Hosmer is first with 871,222. Matt Wieters is third among catchers with 303,500, while the Royals' Salvador Perez leads all players with 1,094,942 votes.

Jonathan Schoop is fifth among second basemen with 210,937, while the Astros' Jose Altuve is first with 624,218. J.J. Hardy is fifth among shortstops with 226,087, while the Red Sox's Xander Bogaerts is first with 598,847.

Voting will be updated next Tuesday.

Manager Buck Showalter said Caleb Joseph will need "at least" 15 days before he's ready to catch again. The Orioles would have put him on the disabled list even if he had been able to return a little sooner. They weren't going to keep only one available catcher on their roster.

The surgical procedure last night eliminated any chance that Joseph would be ready within a week.

The Orioles recalled catcher Francisco Pena from Triple-A Norfolk. He wasn't aware of Joseph's injury until this morning, when he received a phone call around 10:30 a.m. that changed his professional life.

"We were in Lehigh Valley," said Pena, the son of former major league catcher and current Yankees coach Tony Pena. "I was pretty surprised. I didn't know Caleb got hurt. I was in my room. My roommate picked up the phone in my room, and he told me (Ron Johnson) needs to talk to me, and that's when he told me.

"Very happy to be here, but concerned a little for our teammate that just got hurt. You never want to see one of your teammates get hurt like that."

It's one of the risks associated with the position.

"Being a catcher, you can't control that," Pena said. "It's luck right there. Obviously, you're wearing a cup, but it's a matter of luck. You're concerned, but you're never thinking about it. You've got to be ready to block every pitch. You've got to be ready to catch. You can't be thinking about it."

Pena threw out 48 percent of runners attempting to steal while at Triple-A Norfolk. His contributions will come behind the plate more so than beside it.

"I would describe myself as a defensive catcher," he said. "I take a lot of pride in my defense, I take a lot of pride in throwing guys out. I take control of the control.

"As a hitter, I think I'm a gap-to-gap guy. I just try and bring guys in when I have guys on base. I try to help the team whenever I can. I take a lot of pride in my defense."

Pena became comfortable with the Orioles and familiar with the pitching staff in spring training.

"It helps me a lot," he said. "I know all the guys here. I caught all the guys in the bullpen. I caught all the starters here, so I've got a pretty good idea of what they've got, what they throw, what they like to do, what their tendencies are. I think it will help me a lot."

The Orioles moved up catcher Chris O'Brien from Double-A Bowie to Norfolk. They also returned left-hander Edgar Olmos to the Tides after his brief assignment at Bowie.

Pitcher Scott McGough was sent from Norfolk to Bowie and catcher Austin Wynns moved up from Single-A Frederick to Bowie.
