Updating Davis, Jeter's gifts and a few more notes (we're tied)

I'm told that Chris Davis is allowed to play in instructional league games in Sarasota. Not surprising, but it was worth checking. The first game is Monday vs. the Rays. The schedule concludes on Oct. 7. Manager Buck Showalter will let us know when Davis plans on heading down to Florida. To honor Derek Jeter before his final game at Camden Yards, the Orioles presented the Yankees shortstop with the following: 1. An official U.S. Navy Captain hat, presented by Rear Admiral Mercado. 2. A bushel of jumbo steamed crabs and an oversized, specially-crafted, personalized crab mallet, presented by Boog Powell (what, no pit beef?) 3. A cake shaped like Jeter's pinstriped game jersey. 4. A check for $10,000 as a donation to the Miracle League of Manasota in Jeter's name, presented by manager Buck Showalter and right fielder Nick Markakis. Earlier today, Showalter told reporters that he didn't choose the gifts. "I didn't pick it out, but it sounds very apropos," he said. "It's hard. I've been fortunate enough to see a few of these, and what a compliment it is that you can't figure out what to give him. "Is it jumping in the hole and throwing the ball across? When you think about him, what do you think? I think of championship rings. I think of winning." Yes, we also thinking of Jeffrey Maier and a tainted home run. The Orioles' magic number is Earl Weaver after the Blue Jays lost the Rays this afternoon in Toronto. The Orioles have won 10 of their last 13 series finales and are 29-19 this season. Orioles starters are 6-1 with a 1.61 ERA in the last 12 games since Sept. 2. They've registered 10 quality starts. The team's current 3.50 ERA would be its lowest in a full season since 1979 (3.26). The Orioles lead the majors with a 26-8 record at home since June 30 after going 19-21 in their first 40 games. They haven't lost consecutive home games since June 28-29. Is this really the first time that the Orioles have worn "Baltimore" on their jerseys in a home game? I like it. Update: Martin Prado led off the top of the second with a home run to give New York a 1-0 lead. The ball barely eluded left fielder Alejandro De Aza, who may have jumped too early. The next two Yankees singled to put runners on the corners with no outs, but Chris Tillman struck out Chris Young and Antoan Richardson and retired Stephen Drew on a pop up. Tillman threw 11 pitches in the first inning and 30 in the second. Update II: Adam Jones' double in the sixth inning scored De Aza and tied the game 1-1. De Aza singled with one out and scored from first base on Jones' double down the left field line, the ball glancing off Prado's glove. The Orioles had runners on the corners with two outs, but J.J. Hardy flied to shallow center field. Hardy has doubled and singled tonight. Tillman has thrown 96 pitches in six innings.
