Updating Hunter Harvey's throwing progression

Double-A Bowie pitcher Hunter Harvey will resume his throwing program on Monday in Sarasota after being shut down due to some stiffness in his right forearm.

Harvey, 23, has recovered from an injury to his right shoulder that he sustained while trying to avoid a line drive headed for the Baysox's dugout back in late May. Harvey was leaning on the railing, jumped back and suffered what's been described as "posterior shoulder instability."

To simplify it, the shoulder popped out and back into its socket.

The Orioles shut down Harvey after his next start, when he lasted only two innings on June 1 and allowed six earned runs.

Harvey, a first-round pick in 2013 and the son of former close Bryan Harvey, had progressed to throwing off a mound at the Ed Smith Stadium complex, but the discomfort in his forearm forced him to take a step back. He'll toss off flat ground Monday and work his way back to the mound.h

The Orioles are trying to get a healthy stretch from Harvey that could lead him back to the majors and their rotation. His career stalled again after an injury to his elbow led to reconstructive surgery in July 2016.

The forearm issue involves the muscle and isn't regarded as anything serious.

"He just had a little setback," said director of player development Brian Graham. "He had a little forearm tightness and it was not related to his UCL.

"He'll do a throwing program a little bit and then get back to the mound. It won't be a really long process. He'll get back on the mound a lot quicker."

The Orioles don't have a set date for Harvey's return to Bowie. He could pitch in the Arizona Fall League to build up innings.

Manager Buck Showalter told the media in Texas before the series opener that he didn't expect Harvey to pitch for the Orioles this season.

"I'd never say never, but we haven't gotten that far," Showalter said. "There are a lot of steps to be taken before that is a consideration. Right now, I doubt it, but that could change."
