Updating Townsend and Mummey

The Orioles initially were hopeful that when the Carolina League All-Star break ended and the second half began on June 23rd that Tyler Townsend and Trent Mummey might return to the Frederick Keys lineup. But it looks like neither will be able to be activated then as both players are rehabbing hamstring injuries and are on the disabled list. Both players got hurt in a June 8 game at Potomac. Townsend made the All-Star game but will not be able to play in next Tuesday's game. In 52 Keys games, he is batting .317 with 10 homers, 39 RBIs, a .576 slugging percentage and .915 OPS. Mummey, who began the year at Delmarva, is hitting .293 in 15 games with the Keys with one homer, 10 RBIs, an .815 OPS and seven steals in eight attempts. Right now, it is looking like the best-case scenario is for Townsend to possibly return late this month, and Mummey could take longer to come back. Meanwhile, when the Aberdeen IronBirds begin a new season tomorrow night at Ripken Stadium, they will open the season without a single 2011 draft pick on their roster, even though seven players have already signed. The new players from the draft report to Sarasota for workouts and processing after they are signed. The pitchers need to throw bullpen sessions before they are turned loose to pitch in any games. Several of the draft picks could wind up at Aberdeen. It will just be several days or more into the new season before that happens.
