Vespi joining Orioles in Baltimore, Rosenbaum earns promotion

The Orioles are recalling left-hander Nick Vespi from Triple-A Norfolk, an industry source confirmed. Vespi likely is coming back to replace reliever Joey Krehbiel, who exited last night’s game against the Mariners with right shoulder discomfort.

Krehbiel was scheduled to undergo tests on his shoulder today and appears headed to the 15-day injured list.

Vespi retired all three batters he faced last night and got two strikeouts. He threw 11 pitches, keeping him ready for tonight, and maintained a 0.00 ERA in 18 1/3 innings. He’s struck out 26 batters.

Vespi made his major league debut, and his only appearance, on May 20 against the Rays and tossed two scoreless innings.

Krehbiel faced two batters last night, his fastball velocity in steep decline, and exited the game after a two-run single and walk.

Last night marked Krehbiel’s 22^nd appearance of the season. He’s registered a 2.74 ERA and 1.130 WHIP in 23 innings.

The team announced today that Eve Rosenbaum has been promoted to assistant general manager, baseball operations.

In her new role, Rosenbaum will oversee roster management, transactions, financial planning and major league operations and administration, while maintaining her role in player evaluation and acquisition across the professional and amateur markets.

Rosenbaum also will advise and assist executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias and vice president and assistant general manager, analytics Sig Mejdal in baseball operations decisions and departmental management.

Rosenbaum, a native of Bethesda, had served as director of baseball development, a role she held since joining the organization in November 2019.

The Orioles begin a three-game series tonight against the Guardians with left-hander Bruce Zimmermann trying to stop a recent rash of home runs.

Zimmermann has allowed nine in his last two starts and 12 in the last four. He tied the club record with five Sunday afternoon against the Red Sox.

The Baltimore native hasn’t faced the Guardians.

Austin Hays extended his hitting streak to 13 games.

Cedric Mullins has recorded back-to-back multi-hit games after going 2-for-16 in his previous four.

Trey Mancini has reached base safely in 25 of his last 26 games.

Cleveland is starting right-hander Shane Bieber, who’s registered a 3.19 ERA and 1.211 WHIP in nine starts and surrendered only four home runs in 53 2/3 innings. Bieber has allowed four earned runs in his last three starts totaling 21 innings, and he’s struck out 22 batters.

Bieber has made two career starts against the Orioles that resulted in 17 scoreless innings and two wins. He’s walked none and struck out 26.

The Orioles won two of three games against the Indians at home last year and were swept in four games in Cleveland. The Indians’ last three-game sweep at Camden Yards was in 2001.
