What's on second? (Ryan Adams update)

The Orioles need a second baseman, and since they have a fondness for signing veterans to Triple-A contracts, I'm recommending Rich Dauer, Billy Smith, Lenn Sakata or Davey Johnson - if he tires of that managing gig down the road. RIP Alan Wiggins. Brian Roberts remains on the disabled list and is facing the very real possibilty that he'll need surgery to repair a labral tear in his right hip. Robert Andino is going on the DL today with a strained left shoulder that's expected to keep him out three to four weeks. Also recommending Bret Barberie, Jeff Huson, Tim Hulett or Rex Hudler. RIP Jerry Adair. Steve Tolleson started at second base last night against Twins left-hander Scott Diamond. Ryan Flaherty will probably start tonight against right-hander Samuel Deduno. Tolleson could start Wednesday against left-hander Francisco Liriano. Flaherty could start Thursday against right-hander Cole DeVries. You have a better idea? Don't mention LJ Hoes. He's been an outfielder since moving up from Single-A Frederick to Double-A Bowie last summer. He played six games at second base with the Baysox last season, none at Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk this year. I just don't see the Orioles picking him to take over for Andino. Don't mention Jonathan Schoop. If the Orioles haven't moved him up to Norfolk, they're not moving him up to the majors. Schoop hit his 11th home run last night, but he also was batting .248 before the game. Don't mention Ryan Adams. He hasn't played since May 12, when he needed two hits to raise his average to .210 at Norfolk. He went on the disabled list with a hand injury and I don't know what the heck happened to him. I had been told a while ago that Adams was ready for a rehab assignment. Still waiting for it. Carlos Rojas started at second base for Norfolk last night. He was batting .154 before collecting three hits. I wouldn't mention him, either, though you could at least argue that he's suddenly swinging a hot bat. Don't mention Bill Hall. He went on the disabled list a few days ago with a hamstring injury. Rojas had to replace him at second base. Would the Orioles give Blake Davis another look? He started at shortstop last night, but he's made nine appearances at second this year. He also has three two-hit games in his last five starts. Also recommending Bobby Grich, Jerry DaVanon, Billy Ripken, Billy Gardner, Juan Bonilla, Jeff Reboulet, Delino DeShields, P.J. Forbes or Aaron Ledesma. RIP Marv Breeding. The Orioles were carrying an extra position player, so they don't need to add another one tonight. Andino goes on the DL and left-hander Zach Britton is officially recalled and takes the mound. I'm still more concerned about the corner infielders. Mark Reynolds committed his 10th error last night, and it was huge. Chris Tillman could have gotten out of the first inning with one run scoring. Wilson Betemit has 13 errors, including 11 at third base. The Orioles lead the majors with 78 errors. It was unacceptable earlier this season and it's unacceptable today. They're having enough issues with their starting pitching without the defense piling on. Update: Adams will begin his injury-rehab assignment tomorrow with the Gulf Coast League Orioles. Adams will need the weather to cooperate. The GCL team was rained out again today - both ends of a doubleheader.
