Wieters and other assorted pregame notes

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Orioles catcher Matt Wieters can block out contract talks and distractions as easily as home plate. Wieters basically is ignoring a published report that the Orioles reached out to agent Scott Boras with an offer of a contract extension for the two-time Gold Glove winner. The offer, according to CBSSports.com, covers at least five years. "Once the season has started, I'm not worried about it anymore this year," Wieters said. "I'm focused on this year, and anything that involves that, you can talk to Dan (Duquette) or Scott. I'm just going to go out and play this year and worry about winning games more than anything. "That's why we have agents and why we have people behind the scenes. The biggest thing that I've always known is that you need to put your full effort into playing on the field, and once the season comes, that's where I'm at." Wieters will make $5.5 million this year, and he's under team control through the 2015 season. Asked if he'd be willing to sign an extension this summer, rather than wait until after the season, Wieters replied, "Right now, I'm not thinking about it at all. I can't say anything about situations that would come up at any time. Right now, all conversations will go on between Scott and Dan, and I'm just focused on playing right now." More notes: The Orioles have officially placed pitcher Dylan Bundy on Double-A Bowie's seven-day disabled list with tightness in his forearm/elbow, but it's viewed as a precautionary move. No sense pushing him. The minor league DL isn't 15 days, so Bundy could return relatively soon if the discomfort subsides as anticipated. Chris Davis leads the majors in OPS (2.292), slugging percentage (1.625) and RBIs (seven). He's tied for the American League lead in doubles (two) and total bases (13), and is tied for second in homers (two). Davis ranks second in the AL in batting average (.625). Players on the current Tampa Bay roster batted .186 against Miguel Gonzalez last season. Gonzalez is riding a career high-tying three-game winning streak dating back to Sept. 21. The Orioles won nine of his last 11 starts. The White Sox have signed former Orioles pitcher Jason Berken, according to the Chicago Tribune.
