SARASOTA, Fla. - Orioles manager Buck Showalter tried to provide some clarity to the Chris Tillman injury that kept the right-hander out of today's intrasquad game at Ed Smith Stadium.
We know it's a core muscle injury and it's serious enough that he didn't pitch today and won't work out on Monday. However, Showalter also noted that the team is being cautious and no MRI is scheduled at this point.
"He said it doesn't bother him running or throwing," Showalter said. "Right now, it's just precautionary. If it lingers, we'll probably proceed with some other forms to try to find out what it is. It probably wouldn't be as much of concern than if it was later in spring. Just want to be cautious with it right now. We'll see."
Tillman left the complex before the clubhouse opened to the media following the scoreless intrasquad game. Guys who didn't play weren't required to hang around until the finish.
The Orioles will give the injury a couple days to calm down. Tillman will continue to receive treatment from head athletic trainer Richie Bancells.
"Richie said (Tillman) felt pretty good about it when he left last night," Showalter said. "Said he got up last night and felt it at home. I think Richie was a little surprised it wasn't a lot better today.
"I don't want to paint it too cautious and then, I don't know. There's a lot of unknown. Who knows where we go? Richie said if we get to the point where it didn't get better in a while - I don't know what a while is - we might do an MRI on it. See if there's something else there. But we're not there yet."
Tillman missed a start in May 2014 with a groin injury. He started the 2013 season on the disabled list with a strained left abdominal muscle.
Meanwhile, reliever Chaz Roe is fine, though a little sore, after being hit inside the left knee yesterday by a Ryan Flaherty shot up the middle.
"I didn't realize it had gotten that much of the meat," Showalter said. "I thought it was like his shoe or something. It hit him right in the hamstring."
L.J. Hoes is fine after being hit on the left leg by an Ashur Tolliver pitch to close out today's game.
"Just annoyed," Showalter said.
Mark Trumbo committed the only error of the day - the official scorer took it down later but didn't change it to a hit - when he misplayed Dariel Alvarez's fly ball to right. The ball deflected off Trumbo's glove, and Brad Brach reached his pitch count.
"He didn't quite catch it," Showalter said. "I haven't talked to him about it. You don't want me to walk up to him and go, 'What happened?'
"We all know. (Wayne) Kirby will do it in his own way. The sun's over the other way."
Trumbo hit three monstrous home runs in batting practice, almost taking out a couple of cars. He created quite a buzz.
Showalter wasn't willing to place odds on whether the club will sign or trade for another outfielder. The most likely options remain free agent Austin Jackson and the Reds' Jay Bruce.
"(Efren) Navarro turned us down and went elsewhere. I thought we were going to get Navarro," Showalter said.
"Would I bet on it? I wouldn't bet anything the way this thing's gone. I wouldn't take that bet. I'm not a very good bettor.
"As usual, they're probably asking too much now."
Whether the club has a sense of urgency depends on the player, Showalter said.
"There's a sense of urgency if you feel like it upgrades your club. I think it depends on what player it is."
Showalter has no plans to experiment with first basemen Christian Walker and Trey Mancini in the outfield.
"Not yet, no," he said. "I think you'd probably think about Walker before you'd think about Mancini out there, just from a skill set. I'm not sure Mancini's arm would play out there.
"It might be something in Norfolk. I don't think you're going to see (Walker) play in the outfield here. I'll let them think about it. We'll see what our needs are going to be. We've got a lot of outfielders that are kind of slated for that level. I think there's eight of them."
Dylan Bundy struck out Matt Wieters and Chris Davis in his one inning today. He threw 13 pitches, nine for strikes.
"I think one of the things we need to accomplish here is, 'Can he handle the load like it's going to be during the season?' " Showalter said. "I know we're not backing off. If anything, he might get a tad more than everybody else. We'll let him get into a schedule, but he'll get the ball pretty regularly. He was pretty good today.
"One of the bigger challenges we have if Dylan's healthy is how do you ever get to the point with him starting again? We'll figure it out. We won't want to send him to winter ball."
Hunter Harvey induced three ground balls and gave up a single to Jonathan Schoop. He threw 10 of 13 pitches for strikes.
"We want him to get through the year healthy," Showalter said. "I was hoping he would be healthy last year and pitch all year. We need to get him some innings under his arm."
Einar Diaz will be away from the team from March 14-21 to serve as a coach for Panama's entry in the World Baseball Classic qualifier.
The Orioles wore their orange LUNGevity T-shirts today in honor of former public relations director Monica Barlow, who passed away two years ago today. The words "In Memory of Monica" are printed across the front.
"We don't have two of them or we would have worn them this morning," Showalter said. "You'll see them again. It's not just one day."
Reporters joked that she would hate all the attention again this spring.
"Oh, she's angry," Showalter said.
Angela Showalter called Monica's mother, Ramona Pence, earlier in the day.
Barlow staged a courageous 4 1/2 year battle with Stage 4 lung cancer. We received news of her death during our morning clubhouse access before leaving for the first exhibition game in Port Charlotte.
"There are little things you remember, where you were," Showalter said. "I know when they told me she had passed, I remember. Every time I come out of there and I see her picture, I think about it. Tough."
Buck Showalter wears his LUNGevity T-shirt in memory of Monica Barlow on the two-year anniversary of her passing.
