Yankees blast seven homers and sweep series in Baltimore

Maybe that series win at Yankee Stadium last weekend by the Orioles got the Yankees' attention. Because after scoring just five runs in three games at home against Detroit, New York came to Baltimore and hit 14 homers and scored 29 runs in a series sweep of the Orioles.

Today right-hander Domingo Germán allowed two hits and two runs over six innings and New York bashed seven more homers in a 15-3 win to sweep the three-game series.

The Yankees improved to 5-4 and the Orioles fall to 4-5 and are under .500 for the first time since opening day.

It got so bad for O's pitching that infielder Hanser Alberto came in from second base to finish the top of the ninth on the mound. He allowed a two-run homer to Austin Romine and pitched an inning.

David Hess threw 6 1/3 no-hit innings Monday at Toronto, but today allowed three home runs and four runs over five innings. Gleyber Torres led off the second inning and sent a 3-2 fastball over the center field wall. Two batters later, Clint Frazier homered again, and this one made it 2-0.

Gary Sánchez lined a two-out, two-run homer to left in the third for a 4-0 lead. He hit a first pitch elevated fastball 111 mph off Hess, and it just got over the wall at 367 feet. But he would bomb one much farther in the seventh. He blasted a two-run homer off Mike Wright for a 7-0 lead. He hit that one 112 mph and 438 feet for his 11th career multi-homer game.

Sánchez was not done homering. In the eighth he hit a two-run shot off new O's pitcher Dan Straily. It was his first three-homer day, and his six RBIs marked a new career high. Frazier added a second homer in the ninth off Straily, who gave up five runs in 1 1/3 innings in his O's debut.

Hess, now 1-1, went five innings, allowing five hits and four runs with two walks, three strikeouts and three homers. He threw 88 pitches, 51 for strikes, and his ERA is now 2.70 after three 2019 appearances.

Wright struggled again for the Orioles, allowing four runs in 1 2/3 and has given up nine runs in 2 2/3 his last three games.

The Yankees were indeed the Bronx Bombers in this series. They had six homers on the season in their first six games and then hit four Thursday, three Saturday and seven more today. On the season, O's pitchers have allowed 23 home runs. During a four-game losing streak, O's pitching has yielded 16 homers and 34 runs.

The Orioles will host Oakland for four games beginning Monday night. Right-hander Andrew Cashner (1-1, 5.40 ERA) faces righty Marco Estrada (0-0, 2.76 ERA).
