Ynoa knocked out early, O's blown out in trip finale (quotes added)

SEATTLE - The Orioles began today seeking their first two-game win streak in a long time and a series split to end this trip on a good note. When they scored single runs in the first and second innings, that looked possible.

By the end of the third, it was very doubtful.

The Mariners scored eight runs in the last of the third, batting 13 men to break a 2-2 tie on their way to a 13-3 romp over the Orioles. Baltimore falls to 22-56 and has lost 11 of 12, 15 of 18 and 27 of its last 34 games.

The Orioles went 1-3 in this series, 1-6 on this road trip. They have not won two in a row since beating the Rays and Red Sox May 4-6. Since then they've played 43 games with nine one-game win streaks. For the year, they have three actual winning streaks - one of four games and two of two games.

Today marked the ninth time the Orioles have allowed 12 runs or more. It was their 15th time permitting 10 or more, the second on this West Coast swing. They were outscored 59-29 in Oakland and Seattle.

So much for any momentum carrying over from Saturday's 8-4 win, which snapped Baltimore's 10-game losing streak.

Trey Mancini (hitting No. 17) and Seattle's J.P. Crawford (No. 2) exchanged solo homers in the first, and it was 2-2 after the second inning. Hanser Alberto put the Orioles ahead that inning with an RBI double. Coming into this game, 23 of his last 24 hits had been singles. He added a second double in the seventh.

But the roof caved in, and the dream of a win streak did too, when the Mariners opened the 10-2 lead in the third and made it 12-2 in the fourth. The third inning featured eight runs, six hits, three walks and a hit batter. Starter Gabriel Ynoa left down 4-2 with the bases loaded. Righty Matt Wotherspoon let in all three inherited runs, and then three more.

Crawford went 4-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs, and Mac Williamson added a two-run homer and three RBIs as the Mariners improved to 17-25 at home and 35-47 overall. The Mariners have hit at least one homer in all 82 games they've played so far in 2019, an ongoing major league record. With the Orioles down 12-2, Anthony Santander's grounder in the sixth scored Renato Núñez, who led off the inning with a double.

Ynoa gave up seven runs and five hits in 2 1/3 innings and 64 pitches. He is 0-5 with a 6.75 ERA. Today he faced 15 batters, and nine reached. He's given up 13 runs over 7 2/3 his last two starts. Wotherspoon allowed five runs and six hits over 2 2/3 innings.

The Mariners today recalled former Oriole Mike Wright from Triple-A, where he had a 2.66 ERA. He pitched a scoreless last two innings against Baltimore. Wright was designated for assignment on April 21 by the Orioles.

The Orioles will take Monday off and begin a five-game homestand on Tuesday night, when they host Manny Machado and the San Diego Padres at Camden Yards.

Manager Brandon Hyde, on continued pitching struggles for Norfolk and Baltimore: "Yeah. We just don't have a whole lot of arms in the upper levels that can pitch here. So it's, we're able to throw out there what we have right now."

Hyde on Ynoa's last two games: "I just thought he pitched behind in the count and wasn't aggressive today. A lot of ... he was behind. I thought he was pitching away from contact. Mainly a left-handed lineup, and felt like he was just feeling for it a little bit. For me, when he's having success, like when he pitched in Houston, he's super aggressive and in the strike zone at the knees and below. Be able to move the ball around. Just felt like he didn't have his stuff and was a little bit tentative."

Hyde on feeling good early: "We're doing a really nice job in the first inning. That's what is so disappointing. You put up runs early and not be able to shut down innings. That's just ... can't do that. You have to be able to put a zero up after a team sparks you. We had a tough time all year doing that."

Ynoa on his struggles: "Unfortunately, I happen to be, on too many occasions, behind in the count. I was not able to command my pitches today. I think that is why I was taken out of the game so early. The lack of command allowed me not to be as aggressive as in previous games."

Mancini on how team couldn't keep up yesterday's momentum: "After yesterday, that was a great win. We had great energy all game. I had a really good feeling about yesterday's game. (Andrew) Cashner had everybody up in here and ready to go, as he always does. It was a really good win, and I was hoping it was going to give us some momentum going forward but unfortunately, that's not what happened so, off-day tomorrow and, hopefully, we can clear our heads and get it going from here."

Mancini on the 1-6 trip: "Not a great trip, obviously. Kind of reminiscent of the trip last year, we came out to play the Angels and A's and went 0-6, and we only got one this trip. Not ideal. Not where you want to be. Hopefully, we can go home and turn it around here."

Final notes: Hyde said the Orioles will go with a bullpen game on Tuesday at home versus San Diego, but did not yet name a starter. Mancini said his left elbow is completely fine. The O's allowed 13 or more runs for the seventh time, the most in the majors.
