Yost on Dyson, Gonzalez on uncertainty of Game 4 start

KANSAS CITY - Kansas City manager Ned Yost was asked about Jarrod Dyson's comments at his press confernce today. It's the American League Championship Series story that won't die. Dyson said he was confident the series would not return to Baltimore and that the Orioles players may feel the same. Yost was asked if he shares that confidence. "I look to win tomorrow," he said. "My focus has never gone past the next day. I know that is an outstanding baseball team in the other locker room. Extremely well coached with a tremendous offense. They have a tremendous bullpen like we do. My whole focus is trying to find a way to win tomorrow. Don't think of anything else." Did the manager talk to Dyson or any other players about making brash statements? "No," Yost said. Yost confirmed that former Oriole Jeremy Guthrie (13-11, 4.13 ERA) will be pushed back to start Game 3 tomorrow night. Left-hander Jason Vargas was the expected Game 4 starter, but Yost said there is a possibility the Royals bring Game 1 starter James Shields back for Game 4. "There's a chance. Guthrie will go tomorrow and we'll look at it from there. We'll look at it tomorrow," he said. Yost said he would likely decide on his Game 4 pitcher before tomorrow's game, so the Game 3 result would not impact his decision. Now if this series goes the full seven games and there are no further weather delays, these clubs would play five straight days starting tomorrow. Yost was asked how that would impact his bullpen. "It gets a little more like the regular season," Yost said. "We communicate every day with our relievers. We make sure that Wade Davis and Kelvin Herrera generally during the season weren't pitching unless we were tied or ahead. That is apt to change. With our offense swinging the bats good, we'd pitch them down one, maybe down two. Chance to hold the score there." Tonight's postponement is disappointing for all fans and Yost said that's especially the case for fans in Kansas City that were hoping to attend tonight's game. "Of course it is," he said. "We had our off-day yesterday and we were ready to play. But you have to deal with the weather. Now we go home, get a good night's sleep and look forward to playing tomorrow." Meanwhile, we now are waiting to find out if Miguel Gonzalez will start Game 4 for the Orioles or if Buck Showalter will bring Chris Tillman back on normal rest. O's pitchers have thrown 46 innings in the postseason, but Gonzalez has yet to throw a pitch. He went 3-2 with a 1.69 ERA in five September starts, but his last start was on the regular season's final day when he threw five scoreless innings at Toronto. Gonzalez said he's ready for anything. "I threw a bullpen yesterday and felt really good and I'm happy with that," he said. "I threw a sim game and two bullpens before that. I'm ready. I'm excited. "You have to be ready no matter what. This is the playoffs. We want to perform and we are definitely excited for it." Gonzalez said for now, he is proceeding like he'll start Game 4 until he hears differently. "Yeah. That is what they told me, so I have to be ready. Whatever happens tomorrow, I'll be ready for the next day," he said.
