Young delivers triple off bench and O's tie game (O's lose 5-3 in 10 innings)

If you had Sept. 19 as the date when Delmon Young would hit his first triple as an Oriole, go to the window and collect your money. Young delivering as a pinch-hitter has become routine, but the triples are scarce. Young's three-bagger with two outs in the seventh inning scored Alejandro De Aza, and shortstop Xander Bogaerts' throwing error allowed the Orioles to tie the game. delmon-young-runs-black.jpgYoung has 11 career triples, the most recent before tonight coming in September 2012 with the Tigers. He had four with the Twins in 2008, his highest total of any season in the majors. De Aza doubled with two outs for his third hit of the night, and Young followed with a shot to right-center field off Red Sox left-hander Craig Breslow. Young was pinch-hitting for David Lough, who went 1-for-3. Young is tied with Dwight Evans (1991) for sixth place in club history with 10 pinch-hits in a single season dating back to 1974. Young scored the tying run on Bogaerts' poor throw, which he made after fielding Steve Pearce's ground ball. Pearce stumbled and took a hard spill while avoiding first baseman Allen Craig's tag, but he jumped to his feet and gave the "safe" sign. Craig needs to improve his foot work at first base. For starters, he needs to keep the proper foot on the bag while stretching for a throw. Evan Meek, Ryan Webb and Andrew Miller each have thrown a scoreless inning since starter Kevin Gausman left the game. Update: David Ortiz hit his second home run of the night, a two-run shot off Darren O'Day in the top of the 10th inning to give Boston a 5-3 lead. Ortiz has 47 career multi-homer games. Bogaerts reached on Kelly Johnson's throwing error and Ortiz followed with his shot to right field. O'Day has surrendered six home runs this season, two in his last three outings. The Orioles are 14-5 in extra innings. Update II: The Orioles lost to the Red Sox 5-3 in 10 innings before 39,079 at Camden Yards. The Orioles are 92-61 overall and 14-6 in extra innings. The Red Sox are 10-11 in extras.
