Your P-Nats fix: Norris, Peacock, Morris and scoreboard news

I got to sit down and grab some more knowledge from Paul Menhart, pitching coach for the Potomac Nationals regarding their roster this year. We already talked about Fabian and Frias, and it was a big week for the P-Nats with the return of Derek Norris, who is back in the lineup in Potomac after getting over a hamate injury. "He is still trying to get back to 100 percent and he looks good behind the plate. He is blocking the ball well and is happy to be back playing healthy." With the Bryce Harper talk going on, tell me about how intricate the catching position is: "It is a very unique position. It doesn't matter what level you are at. It takes a player with many strengths to be successful. You have to work with a lot of pitchers and figure out how to get the best out of them. You also have to study the hitters to try to find their weaknesses. As a catcher you are constantly making adjustments." Notes on Brad Peacock and A.J. Morris: Brad Peacock 6-1 175, RHP, Miami, FL, 22 years old, 41st round, 2006 draft (1-4, 5.11, 43 K) "His numbers are not doing him justice right now. He has major league stuff. He has a very good sinking fastball. His pitching is so true." The Nats are looking to get some movement on that fastball. The fastball is 92 to 93 miles per hour and has a little bit of straightness to it. So we need a little more sink to it. We need to stop the deep counts. He does get a lot of strikeouts and gets out of tough situations, but at 90 pitches over 5 or 6 innings, we need him to be more efficient." A.J. Morris 6-2 185, RHP, Humble, TX, Kansas State, 23 years old, 4th round, 2009 (1-2, 3.12, 18 K) "He finished second to Stephen Strasburg for the Golden Spikes Award (nation's best collegiate player). He has a heavy, heavy sinker. He is starting to trust it. He can dominate with that pitch. He needs to just pound that thing. He can break bats with his sinker. "He has added a slider. We are working on adding a changeup for Morris. We still need for him to take some speed off of it. We are working on selling the changeup better and concentrating on building arm strength." Potomac also announced a new video scoreboard will be up and running May 24th at Pfitzner Stadium. Details from the P-Nats: ""The addition of the new scoreboard will enhance the fan experience in a big way, and not just from a baseball standpoint," Potomac Nationals Vice President/General Manager Jonathan Griffith said. A new light emitting diode (LED) video display will measure more than 13 feet high by 35 feet wide and span the entire width of the scoreboard. The video display will be capable of showing live video and instant replays during games, as well as dazzling graphics, custom animations, up-to-the-minute statistics and advertisements. An LED baseball scoreboard and LED ribbon display will sit below the video display for additional informational and entertaining content for fans. The LED ribbon display will provide more opportunities for sponsor recognition during games. The video and message displays will incorporate DakStats® software to show current game stats, out-of-town scores and real-time season statistics during every at bat. "We will work hard to provide the Nationals with quality service as customers of Daktronics," Arthur Portnoy, Daktronics Sales said. "We're looking forward to seeing the new system in operation." Installation of the new video and message displays will begin Monday, May 17, and is scheduled to be completed by Potomac's game with Kinston on Monday, May 24."
