Notes on Ayala and Chavez

Notes on Ayala and Chavez
With most of the country focused on football today, I wanted to pass along a couple of Orioles notes and remind everyone that pitchers and catchers report in nine days. Nine ... days. I may need to start packing. Reliever Luis Ayala will be in Sarasota, but the Orioles aren't sure whether he's going to leave for the World Baseball Classic. Ayala is listed on Mexico's roster, and pitching coach Rick Adair is proceeding as though the veteran right-hander will eventually be marked absent....

Quick updates on Jurrjens and Hendrickson

Quick updates on Jurrjens and Hendrickson
The Orioles won't be introducing the newest addition to their pitching staff today. Jair Jurrjens is completing his physical, and the club hopes to make his signing official early next week. It's possible that an announcement will come Monday. Don't expect anything from the Orioles on Super Bowl Sunday besides tweets from Adam Jones, who arrived in New Orleans earlier today. Jurrjens agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million deal last week that includes a possible $2.5 million in incentives....

Rhodes, Tatis and more from Adair (updated)

Rhodes, Tatis and more from Adair (updated)
I've heard from a few people in the organization that the Orioles aren't likely to sign left-hander Arthur Rhodes or infielder Fernando Tatis to minor league contracts. Rhodes threw for the Orioles this week and Tatis worked out for them in the Dominican Republic, as The Sun reported, but a reunion doesn't appear to be in the cards. Rhodes still lives in the area - I saw him in Ocean City last summer and he attended FanFest in January - but the Orioles really don't need another...

Adair confident that Arrieta will rebound in 2013 (with note)

Adair confident that Arrieta will rebound in 2013 (with note)
One of the biggest surprises of spring training 2012 occurred when manager Buck Showalter named Jake Arrieta his opening day starter. It became more probable as we inched closer to the day that the Orioles broke camp, but I don't think anyone saw it coming when pitchers and catchers reported in February. You probably know the rest of the story. Arrieta blanked the Minnesota Twins on two hits over seven innings at Camden Yards, justifying Showalter's faith in him, but the right-hander went...

Adair on Wada and Saunders, plus Jurrjens update
Pitching coach Rick Adair called into the "Hot Stove Baseball" show on WBAL Radio today, and he was asked about Japanese left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada, who underwent ligament-reconstructive surgery on his elbow last May and still hasn't appeared in a game with the Orioles. Manager Buck Showalter told reporters during the Winter Meetings that Wada was ahead of schedule in his recovery. This is true, but Wada doesn't figure to be ready to break camp with the team on opening day. "He's...

Former catcher Earl Williams has passed away (updated)

Former catcher Earl Williams has passed away (updated)
Another member of the Orioles family has passed away. Former catcher Earl Williams, who spent the 1973 and 1974 seasons in Baltimore, died at 64. No other details are available at this time. Update: According to the Newark Star-Ledger, Williams was diagnosed with acute leukemia last July. The Orioles acquired Williams and Taylor Duncan from the Atlanta Braves on Nov. 30, 1972 for Davey Johnson, Pat Dobson, Roric Harrison and Johnny Oates. Williams batted .245/.330/.411 with 36 homers and...

Random notes and quotes

Random notes and quotes
One of the qualities shared by the Orioles' pitchers is their enthusiasm for competing in spring training. They keep insisting that they're looking forward to it, that it adds to the excitement in camp. I'd rather have a spot waiting for me, but that's how I roll. Don't judge me. "We were in the same position last year," said Steve Johnson, who will be fighting for a spot in the rotation. "There were a ton of pitchers in camp last year and I was in a little bit of a different...

More minor league signings

More minor league signings
In their never-ending quest to improve the depth in their farm system, the Orioles have signed three players with major league experience to minor league contracts: relievers Rob Delaney and Manny Delcarmen, and outfielder Chris Pettit. The contracts don't include spring training invites, according to a team official. Delaney, 28, appeared in one game with the Twins in 2010 and four with the Rays in 2011, allowing seven runs and six hits in six innings, with eight walks and three strikeouts....

You never have enough pitching?

You never have enough pitching?
It's one of baseball's most popular cliches, though I changed the punctuation for the title of this blog entry. No matter how crowded the rotation, no matter how deep the depth, teams never feel as though they have enough pitching. Injuries happen. So do slumps. The Orioles used 52 players last season, and half were pitchers. Yes, that's 26. Can you name them without looking it up? I'll make it a little easier and remind you that Chris Davis counts as a pitcher with his one relief...

Orioles sign Dickerson to minor league deal (updated)

Orioles sign Dickerson to minor league deal (updated)
The Orioles will bring another outfielder to camp next month, having signed Chris Dickerson to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training. Dickerson, who turns 31 in April, batted .316/.417/.515 with 24 doubles, seven homers and 25 RBIs in 69 games at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the Yankees' top minor league affiliate affiliate. Dickerson, who bats from the left side, is a career .266/.352/.407 hitter in 599 plate appearances with the Reds, Brewers and Yankees. He appeared...

Who will be left in the bullpen?

Who will be left in the bullpen?
I wondered aloud yesterday whether Orioles manager Buck Showalter would be willing to carry three left-handers in his bullpen. He began the 2012 season with one, Troy Patton, who beat out Zach Phillips. Showalter spent much of the summer wishing he had a second southpaw, which is why J.C. Romero eventually found his way to Baltimore. Brian Matusz solved that issue by converting to a lefty specialist. He's going to compete for a rotation spot in spring training, but the bullpen beckons if...

A batch of questions as spring training approaches (Nick Johnson note)

A batch of questions as spring training approaches (Nick Johnson note)
Two more weeks and I'll be flying down to Sarasota for the start of spring training. Well, I'll actually be flying into Tampa, because Southwest still hasn't located Sarasota on a map. Keep searching, fellas. The most interesting decisions facing manager Buck Showalter, in my opinion, will center on the fifth starter and the last bullpen spot. We also need to know who's going to be the primary designated hitter if Chris Davis is penciled in as the regular first baseman. Will Showalter...

A few notes from the Shorebirds banquet

A few notes from the Shorebirds banquet
I'm expecting a quiet Sunday, as executive vice president Dan Duquette and new director of minor league operations Kent Qualls fly to the Dominican Republic to check out some of their Latin players at the club's year-round developmental program. Qualls has strong ties to Duquette. He spent 16 years with the Expos and Red Sox, primarily working in scouting, player development and Latin American operations, and he was named director of the NIKE Dan Duquette Sport Academy when it opened in...

Revisiting the rotation

Revisiting the rotation
On slow news days, which pretty much covers most of the winter, we've kicked around different combinations that could make up the Orioles rotation in 2013. Up to this point, I've gone with Jason Hammel, Wei-Yin Chen, Miguel Gonzalez, Chris Tillman and TBA. The candidates are plentiful, and we can add one more arm to the mix. Jair Jurrjens will officially become an Oriole next week after he passes his physical. He will be given every chance to earn a spot in the rotation, but having minor...

Graham comments on promotion to director of player development
The Orioles confirmed today that Brian Graham has been named director of player development. He previously served as coordinator of minor league instruction. The club also confirmed the hiring of former Red Sox farm director Kent Qualls as director of minor league operations. John Stockstill will remain as director of player personnel, but the Orioles confirmed that he also will now oversee international and domestic professional scouting. Graham spent six years as the Pirates' director of...

Orioles reportedly reach agreement with Jurrjens
The Orioles have reached agreement on a one-year deal with former Atlanta Braves pitcher Jair Jurrjens, according to CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman. Executive vice president Dan Duquette couldn't immediately be reached for comment. Jurrjens, 26, will receive a guaranteed $1.5 million, and he can earn an additional $2.5 million in incentives, according to Heyman. I'm told that Duquette had been discussing a minor league deal with Jurrjens' agent. The right-hander is represented by the Boras...

Changes in minors include new title for Brian Graham (Jurrjens update)
The Orioles are making some changes to the structure of their player development department. Brian Graham, who has served as the Orioles' coordinator of minor league instruction, will be named director of player development, according to multiple sources. Graham will be responsible for personnel decisions and player movement within the system, among other duties. Graham couldn't be reached for comment last night. In the past, Graham has served as a minor league manager, farm director,...

Spending a few minutes with Matt Wieters (Upton traded to Braves)
Matt Wieters caught 126 games in 2010, 132 in 2011 and 134 last year. How many could he catch this season? "I plan on catching 162," he said, "but I don't think Buck (Showalter) will let me do that." Probably not, but perhaps Wieters will get a little more rest and reverse his workload trend with a full healthy season from backup Taylor Teagarden. "It's something to where you're going to have to re-evaluate how your body feels," Wieters said, "but I feel great going into this...
