BOSTON - J.J. Hardy homered with one out in the top of the first inning to give the Orioles a quick 1-0 lead.
Hardy has five homers this season. Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz has allowed eight in 30 innings.
Ryan Flaherty estimated that he's got 30 friends and family members at today's game. The Rule 5 pick from Maine has been feeling right at home in Fenway Park.
Manager Buck Showalter told reporters yesterday that he wanted to get Flaherty into a game this weekend, and sure enough,...
BOSTON - Orioles manager Buck Showalter told reporters today that he expects outfielder Nolan Reimold to go on an injury rehab assignment in the minors before being activated from the disabled list.
Reimold is eligible to return May 16 after being shut down with a herniated disk in his cervical spine. He still has some tingling in his fingers, though his condition is improving.
Showalter believes that Reimold will need the at-bats, since he hasn't played since April 30 in New York, when his...
BOSTON - Ryan Flaherty has a lot of friends and family here who made the trip from Maine. They'll get to watch him play left field and bat first against Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz.

J.J. Hardy SS
Nick Markakis RF
Adam Jones CF
Matt Wieters C

BOSTON - With a win today, the Orioles would move 10 games above .500 for the first time since June 25, 2005, when they were 42-32.
Yes, it all keeps going back to 2005.
How in the world did that team not win the World Series?
A victory today also would give the Orioles their first three-game sweep in Boston since June 10-12, 1994.
You can do the math. That's a long time ago.
The Orioles have posted 10 wins in 15 games on the road this season, their fewest games to reach that milestone...
BOSTON - The Orioles are going for the sweep today at Fenway Park. They already won the series. They already won the series in New York on the first leg of this trip. But they're not satisfied.
One of the best quotes to come out of the victorious clubhouse yesterday was provided by center fielder Adam Jones.
What's been the biggest difference in the Orioles this season?
"Heart, the accountability," Jones replied. "We play for a manager in (Buck) Showalter who is no-nonsense. If you come...
BOSTON - Manager Buck Showalter provides a good mix of analysis and humor in his postgame sessions with the media.
The analysis, when asked about Jason Hammel: "He was good, Boy, he pounded the strike zone and stuff. He's doing the things to give himself a chance to be good and he's in a good place right now and it's on us to try to keep him there. I can't tell you what it does for a club after you go out there and score some runs to keep putting zeroes up. Just creates good karma."
The...
BOSTON - Once again, Jason Hammel gave the Orioles a quality start and didn't allow more than two earned runs.
It's become routine.
"I felt good," he said after being charged with two runs in 6 2/3 innings in an 8-2 victory over the Red Sox. "I was able to establish the strike zone early and a big inning really takes the stress out of the situation. I was able to open up the strike zone and just attack.
"Two-seamer was running a lot today, but I still had a pretty good feel for it. I...
BOSTON - The Orioles erupted for seven runs in the top of the third inning today, their highest output in a single frame since they scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth on May 25, 2011 against the Royals.
The Orioles also collected seven hits in the inning - including six with two outs - their highest total since tallying seven in the top of the second inning on July 10, 2011 at Boston.
Jason Hammel doesn't need much support today.
Hammel has retired 15 of 16 batters since Adrian...
BOSTON - Boston starter Aaron Cook left today's game. Then he returned to it - with a gash on his left shin that could double as a parking garage.
Cook was injured while covering home plate as Chris Davis scored on a passed ball. Cook's leg came down on Davis' spikes, and he limped to the dugout with the Red Sox's head athletic trainer as reliever Clayton Mortensen jogged in from the bullpen.
All of a sudden, Davis walked back to the mound as the Star Wars theme blared over the PA...
BOSTON - Orioles left-hander Zach Britton threw 47 pitches today in live batting practice at the Ed Smith Stadium complex in Sarasota.
The reports on Britton's left shoulder continue to be positive, and he'll pitch in an extended spring training game on Thursday.
Britton is scheduled to start three extended spring games, including May 15 and 21. He could begin an injury-rehab assignment in the minors on May 26.
The Orioles probably want Britton to start at least two games in the minors...
BOSTON - Endy Chavez is back in left field for the Orioles today. Mark Reynolds remains at third base, with Wilson Betemit serving as the designated hitter.
Robert Andino slides back down to the ninth spot after leading off last night.
For the Orioles:
Endy Chavez LF
J.J. Hardy SS
Nick Markakis RF
Adam Jones CF
Matt Wieters C
Chris Davis 1B
Wilson Betemit DH
Mark Reynolds 3B
Robert Andino 2B

BOSTON - I hope everyone slept fast, as manager Buck Showalter always suggests after a quick turnaround.
In case you forgot, we've got a 1:10 p.m. start today, with Jason Hammel opposing Aaron Cook, who's subbing for Josh Beckett.
Hammel switched places with Tommy Hunter, who starts tomorrow.
I asked Hunter yesterday how his foot was feeling, and he got a puzzled look on his face. I explained that we were told he had an ingrown toenail removed, and he replied, "That was weeks ago. I'm...
BOSTON - Reliver Luis Ayala gets the award tonight for biggest understatement by an Oriole.
"The team in tonight's game had really good relief pitching," he said.
To say the least.
"We have a good 'pen, and that's one of the reasons why," he added, after the Orioles' relievers combined for eight scoreless innings. "We have a pretty good bullpen this year. We make great outs at key times. It's good for the team that we stay consistent.
"I've spent a lot of time with different...
BOSTON - The Orioles committed three errors in the first two innings and added a passed ball to the toxic mix. But in the end, they celebrated a 6-4 win in 13 innings that made the miscues seem a little less important.
Not that manager Buck Showalter overlooked or excused them. They were just easier to accept.
"We played solid," he said. "I'm just disappointed we threw the ball around a little bit tonight, but other than that, I'll take it. You don't usually lead that column over there...
BOSTON - The Orioles scored twice in the top of the 13th inning tonight and defeated the Red Sox 6-4.
The Orioles have won five of six games and six of eight against the Red Sox. They've won four of five at Fenway Park after losing six in a row.
The bullpen was masterful again, registering eight scoreless innings after starter Wei-Yin Chen left the game. That's 19 scoreless innings in a row since Troy Patton gave up a run last Friday.
The bullpen lowered its ERA to 1.56.
Jim Johnson...
BOSTON - The Orioles' bullpen began the night with a 1.73 ERA in 72 2/3 innings, the lowest total in the majors.
Matt Lindstrom kept the pride alive by retiring the side in order in the sixth after replacing starter Wei-Yin Chen.
Lindstrom needed only 11 pitches to finish off the Red Sox, but manager Buck Showalter brought in Pedro Strop for the seventh. Yes, there was a little second-guessing in the press box, mostly from me. But what do I know?
Strop didn't allow a run in the seventh...
BOSTON - It's been a strange night.
I never imagined that I'd be blogging about Miguel Tejada again, at least in connection to the Orioles. I'll stress again that he hasn't signed a contract, according to team officials. They're taking a look at him and could bring him back to the organization on a minor league deal.
Anyway, the Red Sox took a 3-1 lead against Wei-Yin Chen in the third inning on Adrian Gonzalez's leadoff single, a Dustin Pedroia double, David Ortiz's RBI grounder and...
BOSTON - Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette confirmed tonight that infielder Miguel Tejada will report to extended spring in Sarasota and work out for team officials.
Duquette said the Orioles haven't reached a formal agreement with Tejada and no contract has been signed. For now, it's a tryout of sorts that could turn into a deal.
"He's reporting to Sarasota so he can get himself in shape," Duquette said, adding that the Orioles could sign him if they like what they...
BOSTON - That's the question I posed to manager Buck Showalter earlier today, since he indicated after Wednesday night's game in New York that he didn't want to mess with a good thing and move Robert Andino from the ninth spot in the order.
Andino has raised his average to .342. He's also risen from ninth to first.
So why Andino?
"As opposed to who?" Showalter replied, grinning.
Endy Chavez is batting .109. He also hits from the left side, and the Orioles are facing southpaw Jon...
BOSTON - The Orioles are waiting until shortly before tonight's game starts to place outfielder Nolan Reimold on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Tuesday, with a bulging disk in his cervical spine.
Showalter wants to make sure the game isn't postponed because of rain. It's overcast here, but both teams are taking batting practice and the weather isn't expected to halt play.
Luis Exposito is in uniform and will be officially recalled as Reimold's replacement. Reimold will be...
