SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles are having another meeting this morning, this one involving the Major League Baseball Players Association, so the clubhouse is closed to the media until batting practice ends around 11:30 a.m.
Jeremy Guthrie used to be the Orioles' rep, but he's gone. We're not sure who has taken his place.
Sidney Ponson was the rep for one year. Seriously.
I haven't seen a lineup posted, but Brian Matusz will oppose the Phillies' Roy Halladay. And you can bet that most of...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Jake Arrieta recorded 16 outs in four innings in today's game against the Minnesota Twins' Single-A team at Twin Lakes Park. He stayed on the mound for two extra outs in the first and third innings to increase his pitch count, which stood at 63 - including 45 strikes - once he was finished.
Arrieta gave up two singles in the second inning. His defense committed two errors behind him in the fourth, which also kept him on the mound. His fastball was 94-95 mph.
"Today was...
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles are off today for the only time this spring, and unlike last year, manager Buck Showalter hasn't arranged an intrasquad game to keep us busy. However, Jake Arrieta is scheduled to throw four innings at the minor league complex at Twin Lakes Park, so I'll be heading over there around noon to make sure his arm doesn't fall off.
Would it surprise anyone?
The pitching news here goes from good to bad within hours. One guy progresses and another guy regresses.
The...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Orioles pitcher Zach Britton has been scratched from Monday afternoon's start at the minor league complex because of a sore left shoulder.
Britton was supposed to go three innings in a Single-A game at Twin Lakes Park, but he's bothered by inflammation in the shoulder. Team orthopedist Dr. John Wilckens examined him today.
The Orioles will know more about Britton's condition and future availability on Tuesday.
Britton threw two innings and 31 pitches Thursday in a game...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Alfredo Simon was supposed to throw 60-65 pitches tonight, but he tweaked his groin again in the second inning and didn't return for the third.
Simon was pitching for the first time since March 10. He's totaled seven innings in three outings.
"The thing is my groin was bothering me a little bit in the second inning," he said. "They asked me if I hurt myself a little bit and I said, 'Yes.' I feel strong, but in the second inning I tweaked my groin, so I stopped, and...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Manager Buck Showalter didn't bring Mike Wright here to serve only as an extra arm late in a split-squad game.
Wright, the third-round pick in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of East Carolina, replaced Luis Ayala to begin the fourth inning tonight and faced Mark Teixeira, Raul Ibanez and Bill Hall.
So much for mop-up duty.
Wright struck out Teixeira and Hall and retired Ibanez on a pop up. His fastball registered 92-93 mph.
He wasn't done. Showalter kept him in the...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Two of the quieter bats in Orioles' camp cranked up the volume tonight in the first inning.
Adam Jones drilled a three-run homer to center field off Yankees starter Ivan Nova to give the Orioles an early lead. After Chris Davis grounded out, Matt Wieters launched a home run to right field on a two-strike pitch.
Jones was 5-for-22 with two RBIs before tonight, but he seemed prolific compared to Wieters, who was 2-for-20 with no RBIs.
Jones didn't have an extra-base hit...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Ryan Flaherty has a nice collection of gloves in his spring training locker, but not because he's a memorabilia nut.
Flaherty is making his first start in right field tonight against the New York Yankees. He's also played left field, shortstop, second base and third base.
The only thing missing is a catcher's mitt.
"I guess if they asked me, I'm sure I could go back there and make it work, but I don't have much experience behind the plate," he said, grinning....
SARASOTA, Fla. - Dave Philley, who played for the Orioles in 1955-56 and 1960-61 as part of an 18-year major league career, died Thursday in his hometown of Paris, Texas. He was 91.
Philley was the oldest living former Oriole.
Philley set a record with 24 pinch-hits during the 1961 season - an American League record that still stands.
Coincidentally, one of Philley's best friends, Eddie Robinson, is now the oldest living ex-Oriole. Robinson, 91, who also hails from Paris, Texas, played four...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Nick Markakis is starting again tonight as the Orioles' designated hitter, giving him back-to-back games for the first time this spring.
OK, what position hasn't Ryan Flaherty played?

SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles have two split-squad games again today. They might be approaching a spring training record.
I'm skipping the 1:05 p.m. game against the Braves in Orlando, because the clubhouse at the Ed Smith Stadium complex opens to the media at 2 p.m. Also, the Orioles figure to play most of their "regulars" in the 7:05 p.m. game against the Yankees that airs on MASN.
Jason Hammel and Tsuyoshi Wada will pitch against the Braves, who will start left-hander Mike Minor. Alfredo...
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles played to their third tie in eight days today, getting a two-out double by Joe Mahoney in the bottom of the ninth and an RBI single from Steve Tolleson to erase a 3-2 deficit.
Neither team scored in the 10th, and the Orioles' record stands at 5-6-3.
Zach Phillips retired the side in order in the top of the 10th. Pedro Strop gave up two hits in the ninth, but didn't permit a run.
Kevin Gregg, Jim Johnson and Matt Lindstrom also had scoreless innings. Johnson...
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles scored twice in the sixth inning on an error and passed ball to reduce Boston's lead to 3-2.
Way to manufacture those runs!
Nick Markakis collected his second hit, a double, took third on an Adam Jones single and came home on an errant pickoff throw. Markakis isn't running at full speed, and he was cautious breaking back toward second on Jones' grounder up the middle before taking third.
Wei-Yin Chen met with reporters outside the clubhouse after allowing...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Left-hander Wei-Yin Chen became the first Orioles pitcher today to work past the fourth inning, though the fifth didn't go as smoothly as the rest.
Chen took a three-hit shutout into the top of the fifth before allowing back-to-back singles to Ryan Lavarnway and Pedro Ciriaco, and a three-run homer to former Orioles farmhand Nate Spears. His only walk came with two outs to former Orioles outfielder Darnell McDonald, but Josh Kroeger struck out looking to end the inning.
Chen...
SARASOTA, Fla. - I don't have much to report from manager Buck Showalter's pregame session with the media, except it's really, really hot on the field.
Showalter received a favorable report on Tommy Hunter's four-inning, 60-pitch effort in yesterday's minor league game. He noted that Hunter tired a little in the fourth inning.
Showalter confirmed that Hunter will start Wednesday against the Blue Jays in Sarasota.
Reliever Darren O'Day is throwing off a half mound today as he recovers...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Tommy Hunter threw four innings and 60 pitches yesterday against the Boston Red Sox's Single-A team at Twin Lakes Park, just as the Orioles wanted him to do.
"I felt good," he said. "They were swinging the bats a lot yesterday. I made good pitches. I was throwing all four of my pitches for strikes."
Hunter still hasn't pitched in a Grapefruit League game because of discomfort in his lower back that no longer requires treatment - just some exercises - but his debut...
SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles are playing split-squad games against the Red Sox this afternoon. You'll notice that the majority of regulars are staying back at the Ed Smith Stadium complex.

Nick Markakis DH
Adam Jones CF
Matt Wieters C
Mark Reynolds 3B

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Twins put the tying run on base against left-hander Troy Patton in the bottom of the ninth, but Oscar Villarreal replaced him with one out and retired Luke Hughes and J.R. Towles on ground balls to secure the Orioles' 3-1 victory.
Manager Showalter addressed the following topics:
On Chris Tillman:
"Tilly's stuff has been good. He's had a problem in the past of not carrying what he's capable of early in a ballgame, but that hasn't happened down here. I've been...
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Chris Tillman made his first start today after two relief appearances, this time working ahead of left-hander Dana Eveland instead of following him.
Tillman was charged with one run in 3 1/3 innings. He allowed four hits and walked two batters. Of his 51 pitches, only 28 were strikes. His fastball routinely hit 94 mph.
It was a mixed bag.
"I think it's still a work in progress," he said. "My windup felt good. Stretch is something I'm still playing with, and trying to...
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Chris Tillman was charged with one run today, and it scored after he left the game, but his command was shaky in his third spring outing.
Tillman allowed four hits, walked two and struck out one in 3 1/3 innings. He threw 51 pitches, 28 for strikes.
His pitch count was elevated in part because of his throwing error in the first inning after fielding Denard Span's tapper, and a fly ball from Luke Hughes in the second inning that dropped between left fielder Wilson Betemit...
