Josh Stinson talks about returning to the Orioles

Josh Stinson talks about returning to the Orioles
Josh Stinson returned to the Orioles today from Triple-A Norfolk for the third time. His first stay lasted just one day and the second stay lasted only two days. He joked he is shooting to be here three days this time. Stinson first came up to start against Toronto on April 24 and gave up five runs and four homers over 5 2/3 innings. He returned for two games, but did not pitch July 10 and 11. "Anytime you get called up, you're excited. Just come up here and do whatever job they need," he...

Showalter talks about Davis hitting third and Markakis batting fifth

Showalter talks about Davis hitting third and Markakis batting fifth
For the second game in a row, Chris Davis will bat third for the Orioles and Nick Markakis will hit fifth. It's no secret that Markakis is struggling to drive the ball recently. He has gone 24 games without an extra-base hit and 44 games without a homer since June 24. He's getting his hits, not just any for extra bases recently. Markakis has just two extra-base hits (both doubles) in 38 games since July 1. Davis is obviously a threat anywhere you put him in the order. For tonight, that is...

O's are now four games out of the playoffs with teams behind them gaining ground (Walker update)

O's are now four games out of the playoffs with teams behind them gaining ground (Walker update)
When the Orioles began the second half going 4-0 and scoring 23 runs, they looked like a team poised to go on a hot streak. But then they lost five of the next six. When the Orioles started their last road trip going 4-1 they looked poised for a great trip. Then they lost three straight at Arizona, each in walkoff fashion. When Nate McLouth hit a leadoff homer last night you had the feeling the O's may get it going against Colorado and start a nine-game homestand with a much-needed win. And...

K-Rod updates his injury (plus other postgame quotes)
Francisco Rodriguez walked off the mound beside trainer Richie Bancells in the eighth inning tonight, but said he does not expect to end up on the disabled list. He gave up a homer and one batter later, left with a strained right groin, an injury he also dealt with in 2011. "This did not start today," Rodriguez said. "Been for the last week kind of grabbing a bit and a little soreness. Today it got a little worse. But come in tomorrow, get some treatment and go get them, I'll be all...

Rockies get two homers from No. 9 spot in 6-3 win over Orioles

Rockies get two homers from No. 9 spot in 6-3 win over Orioles
A pitcher with an ERA of 9.64 over his previous three starts made a quality start and two different No. 9 hitters homered as Colorado beat the Orioles 6-3 in front of 31,438 at Camden Yards. It's going that well for the Orioles, who have now lost four in a row to fall to 65-56. Not the start to the homestand they wanted. The game did begin well for the Orioles when Nate McLouth homered leading off the last of the first for a 1-0 lead. It was his eighth homer of the year, his second leadoff...

Chris Tillman and Tommy Hunter talk about the change at pitching coach
Two Orioles pitchers this afternoon expressed support for pitching coach Rick Adair, who is taking a personal leave of absence, and confidence in Bill Castro, who has moved from bullpen coach to take over as pitching coach. Scott McGregor joins the staff as bullpen coach. "I think we are on the same page here and we know what we need to do. Just go about our business the same way we have been," Chris Tillman said. "Billy has been around here for two years, he knows what we do. He is out...

Adam Jones on the Arizona series and the mood in the clubhouse (Harvey to Aberdeen)

Adam Jones on the Arizona series and the mood in the clubhouse (Harvey to Aberdeen)
Adam Jones was asked today about the Orioles' three losses in Arizona. They suffered three consecutive walk-off losses and now have to bounce back from that tonight as they begin a homestand against Colorado. "A loss is a loss. Any loss (stinks)," Jones said. "The way they happened is not the best way to lose a game. We gave ourselves a chance to win. "We are behind every person on the team. We pick up everybody. They are team losses. There is not one person in here doubting the next....

Jim Johnson: "My confidence is fine, Buck's confidence is fine"
Struggling closer Jim Johnson answered several questions today by his locker. It was not his favorite thing to do, I'm sure, but he was accountable for his performance as always. He ended his session with reporters answering a question about manager Buck Showalter's confidence in him. "It's fine. I mean, we talk and what else is there to say? I've talked about this for the last three days," he said. "My confidence is fine, Buck's confidence is fine. We're good and we're going to win...

Several O's minor league clubs are chasing the playoffs

Several O's minor league clubs are chasing the playoffs
We are coming down the home stretch in the minor league seasons with the regular season finales set for Sept. 2 in several leagues, and a few Orioles affiliates remain in playoff contention. After a 7-2 win last night, Triple-A Norfolk is 66-61 and one game behind Pawtucket in the International League's wild card race. There are four teams within 2 1/2 games in the chase for one playoff spot. Double-A Bowie beat Erie 4-2 last night to go to 62-60. The Baysox are in fourth place, but just...

A look at Jim Johnson's saves record in one-run games

A look at Jim Johnson's saves record in one-run games
The stat sheet tells a story that is critical of Orioles closer Jim Johnson. He has been excellent closing games this year with a two- or three-run lead, but has struggled when he enters the game with just a one-run advantage. Pitching with a one-run lead, Johnson has saved nine of 16 games for a 56.3 percent success rate. Pitching when ahead by two or more runs, he has saved 30 of 32 for a 93.8 percent success rate. That doesn't even tell the whole story. Johnson recorded saves in his first...

As Davis pursues him on O's homer list, Gentile recalls magical 1961 season
With 44 home runs, Chris Davis now ranks fourth on the Orioles' single-season list. He is chasing Brady Anderson's 50 homers in 1996, Frank Robinson with 49 in 1966 and Jim Gentile, who hit 46 in 1961. Gentile, had a breakout season in 1961 and that was quite a year for Major League Baseball. While Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle of the Yankees were chasing Babe Ruth's all-time single-season home run record of 60 (which Maris would top by hitting 61), a young first baseman in Baltimore was...

Arizona beats Orioles in 14 innings to sweep series

Arizona beats Orioles in 14 innings to sweep series
For the Orioles, it was a blown save, a blown game and a frustrating end to their road trip. Aaron Hill's RBI single in the last of the 14th gave Arizona a 5-4 win over the Orioles as the Diamondbacks sweep the series, winning three in a row by one run each. Arizona won each game in its last at-bat. Down to one pitcher left in the bullpen in T.J. McFarland, Buck Showalter brought starter Bud Norris on for the 14th. Norris walked the first two batters on four pitches each before he fanned...

Alvarez set to move to Frederick; O's face tough task today against Corbin
Cuban outfielder Dariel Alvarez is playing his third game in the Gulf Coast League today. It is believed to be his last in Florida, as the Orioles are planning to move Alvarez to Single-A Frederick, where he is expected to debut for the Keys on Thursday at Potomac. The Keys return home Saturday to begin a series against Winston-Salem. The 24-year-old Alvarez, signed by the club to an $800,000 bonus in July, went 2-for-4 in his first two GCL games Monday and Tuesday, and homered in his first...

A look at some of Jim Johnson's stats from 2012 and 2013

A look at some of Jim Johnson's stats from 2012 and 2013
So why did Jim Johnson save 94 percent of games last year (51-of-54) and is on pace for 83 percent this year (39-of-47)? Johnson began this year saving 14-of-14. He then suffered four blown saves in five chances before saving 12 in a row. He then suffered two blown saves in four chances before saving 10 in a row. Now he has suffered back-to-back blown saves. Yes, eight blown saves is a lot. Johnson's command and sink just do not seem to be at 2012 levels. Even in some of his saves he has...

Paul Goldschmidt homers in ninth and 11th as D-backs beat Orioles
Jim Johnson suffered another blown save, and T.J. McFarland knows how he feels. Arizona slugger Paul Goldschmidt hit a game-tying homer off Johnson in the ninth and a game-winning homer off McFarland leading off the 11th as the Diamondbacks beat the Orioles 4-3 at Chase Field. The Orioles fell to 65-54 and missed a chance to move within a game of Tampa Bay for second place in the AL East and within a game of Tampa for the AL's second wild card berth. Goldschmidt hit Nos. 28 and 29. The O's...

A look at some big hits by Chris Davis and his MVP chances

A look at some big hits by Chris Davis and his MVP chances
Chris Davis has had a string of big hits on this current road trip that have been MVP-like. They have come in big spots and produced very big runs for the Orioles. Tuesday at San Diego: An RBI double in the eighth inning for a 3-1 lead. Wednesday at San Diego: A three-run homer in the eighth for a 6-3 lead. Friday at San Francisco: A two-run double in the 10th for a 4-2 lead. Saturday at San Francisco: A 466-foot solo homer in the 8th pulls O's within 3-2. Monday at Arizona: A solo homer in...

So how will the Orioles bounce back from that one?

So how will the Orioles bounce back from that one?
Going into the bottom of the eighth last night, Troy Patton had allowed just one homer since May 28 and Wil Nieves had not homered in 126 at-bats all year. Of course, Nieves homered as Arizona took a 6-5 lead. But then, with a gritty rally, the Orioles tied it in the ninth. But Darren O'Day, who had not allowed an earned run in 41 of 53 appearances this year faced Adam Eaton, who had no homers this year in 76 at-bats. Eaton homered to win it. Of course he did. For those of you that...

Arizona wins on homer in ninth, 7-6 over Orioles

Arizona wins on homer in ninth, 7-6 over Orioles
A wild game that saw the O's lose a lead and then regain a tie, ended in a walk-off loss. Adam Eaton hit his first homer of the year, on the first pitch of the last of the ninth off Darren O'Day, as Arizona beat the Orioles 7-6 at Chase Field. The O's went to the ninth down 6-5, but tied it 6-6 with a gritty comeback on a Nick Markakis sac fly. But it did not lead to extra innings or a win. The O's took a 4-2 lead to the seventh, but Arizona scored three times to get the lead. The inning...

Feldman looks to reverse recent slide tonight against Arizona
Scott Feldman could use a good outing tonight for the Orioles at Arizona. Over his last two starts, he is 0-2 with an ERA of 8.38, giving up nine earned runs over 9 2/3 innings. In his two starts before that, he went 2-0 with an ERA of 2.94. Will the real Feldman stand up? He is 2-3 with a 5.70 ERA over six O's starts since they acquired him from the Chicago Cubs on July 2. The Orioles are 3-3 when he starts and he has recorded three quality starts. The O's pitching staff has allowed three...

Minor league notes: Alvarez set to debut, Walker has MRI (Alvarez homers)
Cuban outfielder Dariel Alvarez, signed by the Orioles in late July, will make his debut for the organization when he plays this afternoon for the Gulf Coast League Orioles. The 24-year-old Alvarez recently acquired his work visa, the last step before he could take the field. Alvarez, who signed for $800,000, played for Camaguey in the Cuban League from 2007-11 and Tuxpan in Mexico in 2012. In five seasons with Camaguey, he batted .297 (341-for-1,147) with 37 home runs and 180 RBIs. In 2011,...
