In Aberdeen, Jonathan Schoop provides an update on his back injury
ABERDEEN, Md. - Orioles infield prospect Jonathan Schoop will play tonight at Ripken Stadium for short-season Single-A Aberdeen and then play again tomorrow with the IronBirds. After that, he expects to rejoin the Triple-A Norfolk Tides. Schoop is coming back from a stress fracture in his lower back. He got hurt in a game on May 12 with Triple-A Norfolk. "I don't know exactly how I hurt it, but it was early in that game," Schoop said today. "My second AB, I got a hit and then went from...

Steve Johnson and Jonathan Schoop will play for Aberdeen tonight
ABERDEEN, Md. - Steve Johnson will pitch tonight at Ripken Stadium as part of a rehab assignment with the short-season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds. Jonathan Schoop will bat third and play second base for Aberdeen in his second game with the IronBirds. Schoop went 2-for-4 here last night with two singles. Johnson is working his way back from a strained left oblique; he went on the Orioles' disabled list June 6. He made one start last Saturday in the Gulf Coast League, pitching two shutout...

Some reactions to last night's trade

Some reactions to last night's trade
Give Dan Duquette credit for this at least - he never stops trying to make this team better and he acts quickly when needed. In acquiring Scott Feldman, the timing was important to me. He got him early in the process, early this month, making him available for more starts to help the team. With several top teams reportedly bearing down on Francisco Rodriguez in trade talks, including Boston, Duquette got the reliever and other contending teams did not. To get him, the Orioles had to give up...

O's offense held down in Kansas City as win streak ends at five

O's offense held down in Kansas City as win streak ends at five
Jason Hammel kept walking the tightrope, but he never quite fell off. However, the O's bats didn't have their usual night tonight, and Hammel took the loss as Kansas City beat the Orioles 3-2. The Orioles' rally in the ninth against Royals closer Greg Holland came up short. Adam Jones produced an RBI triple with no outs to pull the O's within 3-2, but then Holland got Chris Davis to strike out, J.J. Hardy to ground out and Henry Urrutia to ground out as the potential tying run was stranded...

Nicky Delmonico talks about being traded to Milwaukee
Nicky Delmonico's night began with him batting fifth and playing first base for the Single-A Frederick Keys at Winston-Salem. In the top of the second inning, he flied out. As he was preparing to go back on the field to play defense, his tenure in the Orioles organization was about to come to an end. "I was playing, and I'd had one at-bat," Delmonico told me tonight by phone from the visiting clubhouse in Winston-Salem. "I came back in the dugout to get my stuff and go back on the...

O's at the 100-game mark, plus notes on Hammel and Schoop
For the Orioles, there are 100 games down and 62 to go in the 2013 regular season. The Orioles are 57-43 and 2 1/2 out in the AL East. After 100 games last season, the Orioles were 52-48 and 8 1/2 games out of first place. Jason Hammel will again try to get his season pointed in the right direction tonight. Hammel gave up six runs and 10 hits over six innings in his last start before the All-Star break. He is now 7-6 with a 5.24 ERA over 19 starts. After that last outing, Hammel said, "This...

A look at some O's minor league news and notes

A look at some O's minor league news and notes
A quick look at some news and notes from around the Orioles' minor leagues: Since June 8, Triple-A Norfolk's LJ Hoes has hit safely in 31 of 38 games, batting an International League-best .373 with two home runs and 16 RBIs. Over that span, Hoes has registered more walks (25) than strikeouts (19), while posting a league-best .467 on-base percentage. For the season, the 23-year-old ranks among league leaders in OBP (third, .408), runs scored (fourth, 60), hits (fourth, 109) and batting...

With eight wins in nine games, Orioles have stepped up their play

With eight wins in nine games, Orioles have stepped up their play
Suddenly, the biggest problems the Orioles seem to have are getting playing time for bench players and getting some innings for relievers. These are issues they can deal with. The Orioles are playing some of their best baseball of the year now with eight wins in the last nine games. The offense, the rotation and the defense have all come together at the same time and it's a beautiful sight for those all over Birdland to see. It is almost like the Orioles realized the time had come to take...

Crushing in K.C.: O's post 9-2 win in series opener
The Orioles scored early. They scored often. They now have a five-game winning streak for the first time in 2013. The Orioles won for the eighth time in the last nine games as they pounded Kansas City pitching for 18 hits to tie a season high tonight in a 9-2 win over the Royals. Now at 57-43 after 100 games, the Orioles moved to within 2 1/2 games of first-place Boston, which lost to Tampa Bay tonight. The Orioles continued a recent trend of getting early offense and they scored twice in...

Some Orioles-Royals notes

Some Orioles-Royals notes
Although the Royals, can't match the Orioles as a team defensively, they have been playing pretty good defense for several games now. Kansas City tied a club record on Sunday by playing its 11th consecutive error-less game. That matches streaks the Royals also achieved in 1997 and 2011. Kansas City hasn't made an error in the last 101 innings, which is five short of the KC club record. The Royals have just three errors this month. On the year the O's rank first in the AL in fielding...

Some thoughts on Roberts, Wieters and a big week of baseball ahead

Some thoughts on Roberts, Wieters and a big week of baseball ahead
A big week of baseball has arrived. While the Orioles begin a four-game series at Kansas City tonight, the Tampa Bay Rays begin a four-game series at Boston. The Rays are baseball's hottest team with 13 wins in 14 games. But the Rays have also recently taken advantage of a weak schedule. Tampa is 15-2 in July and has played against Houston, the White Sox, Minnesota and Toronto this month. The Rays' pitching has been very impressive and anyone that has watched this team over the last few...

Chris Tillman wins his 12th as Orioles complete sweep in Texas

Chris Tillman wins his 12th as Orioles complete sweep in Texas
For the third day in a row, the Orioles took an early lead at Texas and went on to win behind a solid starting pitching performance. Tonight, the Orioles led 4-0 after four innings and won 4-2 to complete a three-game sweep, as Chris Tillman picked up his 12th win. The Orioles improved to a season-best 13 games over .500 at 56-43 with their seventh win over the last eight games. The O's completed their first three-game sweep at Texas since July 21-23, 1997; however the O's did sweep a...

A tale of Tillman stats and notes

A tale of Tillman stats and notes
As he takes the mound tonight for the Orioles trying to pitch the team to a three-game sweep at Texas, Chris Tillman has one of the best winning percentages in the league since just before last year's All-Star break. Since June 25, 2012, Tillman (20-6, .769) has the second-highest winning percentage among AL starters, trailing only Max Scherzer (23-3, .885). Miguel Gonzalez (17-7, .708) is fourth on the list after Bartolo Colon (16-5, .762). Among AL pitchers with 95 or more innings pitched...

The 2013 Orioles: The defense never rests

The 2013 Orioles: The defense never rests
I'm sure sabermetricians could come up with some advanced stats liked runs saved or something else to show us how good the Orioles defense is. I'm going with the old-fashioned eye test and the O's have filled up with my TV screen with Gold Glove work the last two nights at Texas. Pick a player on the field and he probably made a nice play. J.J. Hardy ranges up the middle, Brian Roberts with an off-balance throw. Adam Jones dekes a runner and gets a forceout at second on what should have...

Early offense, Gonzalez's pitching carry Birds to victory at Texas
It was a night where the Orioles got plenty of early offense, consistent starting pitching and more good defense. They moved 12 games over .500 for the first time in 2013. The O's led 7-0 after three innings tonight and beat Texas 7-4 to take the first two games of this three-game series. On Sunday night, the O's go for their first three-game sweep at Texas since July 21-23, 1997. The O's did sweep a four-game series at Texas in July of 2010. On their fourth try, the Orioles finally moved...

How will Urrutia fare against major league pitching?

How will Urrutia fare against major league pitching?
After posting such a high batting average at two levels of the O's minors this year, how well will the 26-year-old Cuban outfielder, Henry Urrutia, hit major league pitching? It's a good question, and there is no formula that can truly take a player's minor league stats and project what they will be in the major leagues. In some cases, the major league stats can be better. Take Manny Machado, for instance. Last year in 109 Double-A games, he batted .266 with 26 doubles, 11 homers, 59 RBIs,...

A look at Machado's doubles, Davis against Texas and the chance for a road series win

A look at Machado's doubles, Davis against Texas and the chance for a road series win
Don't look now, but Manny Machado is in the midst of a slight doubles drought. He has just one over his last 14 games. Machado has 39 doubles on the year and is on a pace to finish with 65, but that would leave him two short of the all-time record for doubles in one year. Earl Webb had 67 in 1931. If Machado did produce 65 doubles, he would easily set a new Orioles single-season record, passing the mark of Brian Roberts, who hit 56 in 2009. Machado had 11 doubles in 27 games in April, 14...

The pitching takes a turn for the better

The pitching takes a turn for the better
Maybe the Orioles' pitching is about to go on a real good run and maybe we are seeing the start of it in recent games. Consider these stats: * Over the last six games, the O's have recorded five quality starts and the starters' ERA is 3.43. If you could take away the game where Jason Hammel gave up six runs, the starters' ERA is 2.43 in the other five games and the Orioles have won all five. * Over the last 20 games, O's pitching has allowed three runs or less 12 times. * Over the last...

Chen gets it done again as O's top Texas in series opener
For the second start in a row since returning from the disabled list, Wei-Yin Chen faced the Texas Rangers. For the second start in a row, he pitched the O's to a win over Texas. Chen gave up just one run tonight as the Orioles beat the Rangers 3-1 in the opener of a three-game road series to begin the second half. The O's needed to win to keep pace with the top two clubs in the AL East, as Boston and Tampa Bay also won tonight. The Orioles improved to 54-43 with their fifth win in six...

Will Chen pitch well again as the O's face Texas?
The Orioles are certainly delighted that Wei-Yin Chen returned to their rotation before the All-Star break. He pitched the Orioles to a 6-1 win over Texas in his first start off the disabled list and faces the same team tonight. Chen is 4-3 with a 2.82 ERA in nine starts during a season where he missed two months with a strained oblique. Chen has produced six quality starts in his nine outings and the Orioles are 5-4 in those nine games. In two career starts against Texas, Chen is 2-0 with a...
