Making his first start today, Taylor Teagarden talks about calling pitches

Making his first start today, Taylor Teagarden talks about calling pitches
There seem to have been a few times this season, and even in spring training, where I've noticed an Orioles starting pitcher praising catcher Taylor Teagarden and his ability to call pitches. The O's have one of the best backstops, of course, in Matt Wieters and it's nice that the club can send a guy out there to sub for Wieters without a huge dropoff. The pitchers need to be confident in the guy behind that plate and the literally hundred or more decisions he makes each game. I asked...

Miguel Gonzalez not listed among starters for Boston series

Miguel Gonzalez not listed among starters for Boston series
A few eyebrows were raised today when the Orioles released the probable starting pitchers for the upcoming Boston series and Miguel Gonzalez was not listed. The Orioles list Wei-Yin Chen to pitch game one of that series tomorrow afternoon with Jake Arrieta going Wednesday, after an off day and Chris Tillman on Thursday night. Gonzalez, who gave up two runs over 6 1/3 innings in his first start in the third game of the Tampa Bay series, would have been in line to start Wednesday in Boston,...

Getting some help today with a pregame McFarland interview

Getting some help today with a pregame McFarland interview
The players are not supposed to be better at asking questions than the reporters, but when Tommy Hunter noticed several reporters interviewing T.J. McFarland today, he jumped in and provided some solid help. He asked McFarland who he got out for his first major league strikeout last night and then gave him some grief for not instantly remembering it was Trevor Plouffe in the top of the fifth. Hunter: "How many (strikeouts) did you have? McFarland: "Was it five?" Hunter: "Who was the...

Sometimes we overreact to early season statistics and trends

Sometimes we overreact to early season statistics and trends
What have we learned through the Orioles' first five games? Well, the rotation could struggle this year with an ERA of 5.74 through one turn. Chris Davis may not be reliable at first base. After all, he made an error last night, but he may drive in over 500 runs. Adam Jones may have a shot to hit .400. Heck, he's batting .522 already. And the Orioles will be terrible in one-run games this year. They are 0-2 already. Yes, I write this to make a point. Why do we overreact to what happens in...

Postgame comments from Davis, Tillman and McFarland

Postgame comments from Davis, Tillman and McFarland
This time, Chris Davis spent a portion of his postgame interview not talking about his hot bat or making history, but rather a ground ball that he didn't make the play on. It led to an unearned run for the Twins in the ninth tonight off Jim Johnson as they beat the Orioles 6-5. "I went back and looked at it, and my glove was down, my head was down. The ball just went right through my legs," Davis said. "It literally went right between my legs. Just one of those things. I'll wear it on...

Showalter on Davis, Tillman and McFarland after the O's loss to Minnesota

Showalter on Davis, Tillman and McFarland after the O's loss to Minnesota
After all the heavy lifting Chris Davis has done for the Orioles' offense this year, you knew Buck Showalter was not going to be very critical of the guy for a ninth-inning error that led to the go-ahead run for Minnesota in their 6-5 win tonight at Camden Yards. "Chris knows how we feel about him and he's done a great job at first base for us since the first day of spring," Showalter said. "He's been an asset for us there, just like he has offensively. Drove in a big run for us tonight....

Twins take advantage of Davis error in ninth to beat O's 6-5

Twins take advantage of Davis error in ninth to beat O's 6-5
Chris Davis didn't homer, but he did drive in a run for the fifth game in a row to start the season. However, the runner that reached on his one-out error in the top of the ninth came around to score the tie-breaking run as Minnesota beat the Orioles 6-5 tonight. The Orioles are now 3-2 and 0-2 in one-run games. Justin Morneau's ground single to center off Jim Johnson scored Aaron Hicks as Minnesota won to even this three-game series at a victory each. Davis blooped a single to score a...

Leaning to the left on offense (Gausman pitches four tonight for Bowie)

Leaning to the left on offense (Gausman pitches four tonight for Bowie)
Yes, it's a very small sample size, but so far the Orioles have better numbers batting against left-handed pitching. They are facing right-hander Vance Worley of the Twins tonight. He was their opening day starter and gave up eight hits and three runs in losing to Detroit and Justin Verlander. While the Orioles' team average is .348 with a slugging percentage of .717 against southpaws, it's not like the numbers are bad against the righties at .307 and .436. Chris Davis and Adam Jones are...

Was a velocity increase the biggest factor for Chris Tillman in 2012?

Was a velocity increase the biggest factor for Chris Tillman in 2012?
Chris Tillman comes off the disabled list tonight to make his first start of the season after going 9-3 with an ERA of 2.93 in 15 starts last year. He went 3-1 with an ERA of 1.80 over his last six starts. The season was a huge success for him and fans wondered if he had finally turned a corner and had gone from prospect to consistently dependable starting pitcher. In 36 starts from 2009-11, Tillman won just seven games. He won nine last year in just 15 starts. Here is another impressive...

Ryan Flaherty talks about getting the chance to start at second base

Ryan Flaherty talks about getting the chance to start at second base
With Brian Roberts now on the disabled list, Ryan Flaherty is starting at second base tonight and batting eighth after also getting the start yesterday against Minnesota. "Any time you get a chance to play, it's exciting," Flaherty said. "Just to come out and try to help this team do what it's been doing the first few games, help this team win." Flaherty is usually a man of few words, but today he had more than a few when he was asked his reaction to Roberts suffering a ruptured tendon...

Minor league notes on Ford, Gausman, Jones, Avery and more

Minor league notes on Ford, Gausman, Jones, Avery and more
The Double-A Bowie Baysox had quite a night of offense Friday at Harrisburg. The Baysox recorded 20 hits in a 15-7 win over Harrisburg to improve to 1-1. Lew Ford is 4-for-9 through two games with three doubles and a homer. He has an OPS of 1.556. After going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in the season opener, Xavier Avery went 5-for-7 with two RBIs to tie the club record for hits in a game. Earlier this week I posted this story on Avery. The Baysox already have 12 doubles, which is twice as...

With torrid start, Davis overshadowing teammates who are also hitting well
So remind me again. Is the Orioles first baseman's name Chris, Crush or Crash Davis? Call him what you want, but just don't call Chris Davis late to get into the batter's box. Davis has set a major league record for most RBIs in the first four games of a season with 16, crushing (pun intended) the previous mark of 12. He has tied three others to hold the major league record for homering in each of his team's first four games. No player in big league history has homered in the first five...

Postgame comments from Wieters and Arrieta

Postgame comments from Wieters and Arrieta
It is starting to get to the point where Orioles players are having a hard time coming up with adjectives describing what Chris Davis is doing right now. But Matt Wieters admits that the players were thinking homer just like the fans were when Davis came up in the eighth today in a 5-5 tie. "I think everybody was thinking it the way he has been swinging the bat lately," Wieters said. "He's been doing some damage and he's not missing his pitch right now. We're going to try and keep him...

Chris Davis on the slam, the record book, the crowd and more
Chris Davis said he is now aware of the elite company he joined today as he became the fourth player in major league history to homer in each of his team's first four games of a season. "They told me. It's pretty cool," he said simply. "I saw something last year where Larry Bird was talking about individual statistics and records and people come along and break them. The biggest is championships, division titles, World Series. They can't take that away from you." Not only did Davis...

Davis puts name in record book, O's beat Twins 9-5
Different town, almost the same result for Chris Davis. The red-hot Oriole brought his act to Camden Yards today and didn't disappoint. After driving in four runs each of the last two games and 11 in the season's first three games, he knocked in five today as the Orioles beat Minnesota 9-5 in front of a sellout crowd of 46,653. Yes, this is unbelievable. Davis hit a grand slam in the last of the eighth to become the first Oriole to ever homer in the season's first four games and just the...

Arrieta struggles to limit the damage in the fourth and other notes

Arrieta struggles to limit the damage in the fourth and other notes
As he tries to prove he's a better pitcher than the one that carried a 6.20 ERA last year, Orioles right-hander Jake Arrieta is going to need to limit the big inning better than he was able to today in the top of the fourth. The Twins scored four times - on two singles, a double, a triple and a walk - to take a 4-1 lead. Arrieta had allowed just two hits on 47 pitches over the first three innings, but the Twins broke through in the fourth. Brian Dozier's two-run triple keyed the inning as...

Alexi Casilla: Ready when needed (Frederick's roster added)
When the Orioles picked up Alexi Casilla off waivers from Minnesota in November he was a player that added some infield depth who could also be a second base option if Brian Roberts needed to start the season on the disabled list. Well, Roberts was placed on the DL today, after the third game, and Casilla, one of the club's backup plans, now could get more playing time while Roberts is out. Ryan Flaherty is starting this afternoon, but Casilla said he's ready for anything the club...

Chris Tillman said he's fine and ready to come off the DL tomorrow
Chris Tillman keeps saying the left abdominal strain that forced him to miss some time in spring training is no longer an issue. It is now further in his rear-view mirror and he's ready to come off the disabled list tomorrow night and make his first start of the 2013 season. "Absolutely, I feel great," he said this morning. "I have since the last time I felt it. I've felt pretty good. Can't wait to get out there. First three games were really exciting. "I am definitely ready and not...

Chris Davis talks about his hot bat, playing at home today and more
It should come as no surprise that Chris Davis' phone has been blowing up in the last few days as friends and family congratulate him on his good start. Of all the well wishes, one stood out to him. "Lot of people from back home saying what's up and they're proud of me. My uncle told me that he was proud how I was playing but that he loved me regardless of what I was doing on the field. I thought that kind of puts things in perspective," Davis said this morning in the Orioles...

Some impressions on the series with Tampa Bay and other notes

Some impressions on the series with Tampa Bay and other notes
So the Orioles are 0-1 in one-run games so far, but they are plus-5 in run differential. So there is that. It wasn't completely a one-man show - sure, it was close - but the Orioles offense just put up seven, seven and six runs over three games against a pretty good pitching staff. The Rays led the American League in ERA easily last year at 3.19 and they finished second in the league in ERA the two years before that. Anytime you can score 20 runs in a series against that staff, that's a...
