A few morning notes (updated)

SARASOTA, Fla. - Outfielder Francisco Peguero, who remains shut down with a strained right wrist, must wear a brace for two weeks due to inflammation and most likely will begin the season on the disabled list. Peguero is out of minor league options and the Orioles wanted to take a long look at him this spring. He's appeared in only six games, going 4-for-15 with a triple and three RBIs. "It's frustrating," he said. "I can't do anything right now. I'm here to make the team and I can't do it." Pitcher Edgmer Escalona has been shut down with inflammation in his right shoulder, but he's cleared to start exercises on it this week. Escalona hopes to begin throwing within 1 1/2 weeks. He's also out of options and could be headed to the disabled list. "I feel great," he said. "The trainer is doing great work. Every day he asks how I'm feeling and it's a lot better. Now, I have to get ready for the season." David Lough stopped by his locker and headed straight to the players dining room, which is off limits to the media. Still haven't talked to him since he was scratched from Friday's lineup in Fort Myers with neck stiffness and sent to a neurologist. Steve Johnson threw inside the covered batting cage Monday and didn't need to pitch in yesterday's game against the Twins' Triple-A team at Ed Smith Stadium. Brian Matusz started yesterday and went five scoreless innings, allowing two singles and walking none. He threw about 60 pitches and was satisfied with the results. "I felt good," he said. "I think the original plan was to go out and throw four (innings). I was able to find a nice groove early and was able to get some quick outs, so fortunately I was able to go out there and throw five. "Guys were swinging, but I was also throwing strikes. I didn't walk a guy in five innings, which is always helpful. It was good. I was effective. Threw all four pitches, mixed them all well and was efficient." Kevin Gausman followed Matusz and worked three innings, allowing one run and three hits in three innings, with no walks and four strikeouts. "We had to get our work in. If we didn't throw, it would mess up everything and we'd have to push guys back," he said. "It was good. My slider was really good. I got a backward strikeout on it. Going into the game, that's what I wanted to work on, and it just so happened that they had a lot of right-handed hitters in the lineup." Zach Britton struck out two batters in one inning. "I got a lot of swings and misses with my sinker," he said. "I'd like to get more ground balls, but they were swinging and missing on it. But I'll take that." Josh Stinson also worked one inning yesterday, throwing only six pitches. The first three came against former Orioles minor leaguer Brandon Waring. "It was quick and easy," Stinson said. "I wish they could all go that way." Update: Dylan Bundy will throw off a flat mound today at 10 a.m. Bundy is scheduled for three flat mound sessions before progressing to a half mound.
