Adam LaRoche slams three-run shot, Nats win 4-2

There was a big ovation as the Nationals took the field at Nats Park for the first time since wrapping up their second National League East title in three seasons last Tuesday in Atlanta. NatsParkSunsetWide.jpgRight-hander Tanner Roark allowed a double in the first inning, but has since recorded six straight outs. Jayson Werth made a diving catch in right to rob Kirk Nieuwenhuis of extra bases, ending the second inning. Mets right-hander Bartolo Colon surrendered a leadoff hit to Denard Span and later a walk to Adam LaRoche, but also has kept the Nationals off the board for the first two frames. No score heading to top of the third in D.C. Update: Denard Span made a diving catch to his right and then crashed into the center field wall in the third. The catch prevented Matt den Dekker from an extra-base hit and ended the inning. But Span left the game and was replaced by Michael A. Taylor. We will update Span's status as soon as we hear. Update II: In the fifth, the Mets put together a couple of doubles to get on the board. The second extra-base hit was a ground-rule double by Nieuwenhuis, and the Mets lead 1-0. Update III: Taylor smacked a run-scoring double down the right field line and the Nationals tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth. Later after a Werth walk, Adam LaRoche crushed his 26th homer deep over the right field fence for a three-run shot, and the Nationals lead 4-1. Update IV: Roark went 6 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and two runs. He walked none and struck out one. He tossed 86 pitches, 58 for strikes. Ross Detwiler allowed a sac fly to center that scored a run and the Nationals lead 4-2. Update V: Drew Storen came on in the ninth to record his 10th save of the season. The Nationals defeated the Mets 4-2. Roark notched his 15th win and the Nationals have 92 victories on the season.
