Orioles manager Buck Showalter wanted to rest Matt Wieters after a night game, and he decided to start Chris Snyder against White Sox left-hander Hector Santiago. He would have considered Steve Clevenger against a right-hander.
Clevenger has impressed Showalter and bench coach John Russell with his hitting skills during workouts.
"He has a nice flat bat," Showalter said. "It reeks of hit and run when you watch his swing. He doesn't strike out much. Puts the ball in play. He reminds me of Scott Bradley."
Jonathan Schoop still hasn't made his major league debut. The Orioles wanted to evaluate whether he could be their starting second baseman next season, but it's a difficult task with the club in playoff contention, Schoop appearing in only 70 games at Triple-A Norfolk this season because of a back injury, and Brian Roberts staying healthy and in the lineup - now emerging as the leadoff hitter.
Is there a temptation to play Schoop, or to give Henry Urrutia starts in the outfield, as part of the evaluation process for 2014?
"Temptation? Not yet," Showalter replied. "I can fight that temptation as long as we're still fighting for a playoff spot. Not that they couldn't be a contributor and will be asked to, but no. That's to be continued. And will one game answer all those questions?
"It's invaluable for Jonathan and Henry to see these games in September. It's such a teaching/learning tool and they're benefiting from what these guys have done to be able to be in this environment. You can tell there's a process that they're taking in. Some guys are different. Some guys don't get any benefit from it."
Showalter said he doesn't think it's fair right now to the prospects or the players who have been here most or all of the season to start adjusting the lineup just to evaluate the talent, "as curious as we all are."
"They'll get their time," Showalter added. "I hope it's not this year."
Chris Davis hit his 48th home run last night, giving him 81 over the last two seasons to tie Rafael Palmeiro (1997-98) for the most in club history.
Adam Jones is the 13th player in club history to post a 30 home run/100 RBI season. It's the 22nd 30/100 season in Orioles history.
Wei-Yin Chen has allowed three earned runs or fewer in 38 of his 50 major league starts (76 percent), and he's permitted three or fewer in 15 of 18 starts this season.
