After allowing seven homers, O's pitchers try to get back on track against the A's

After allowing seven home runs and 15 runs Sunday, there is nothing, really, to do for the Orioles pitching staff and team as a whole but get back on the horse tonight versus Oakland. Try to ride their way to victory and put that mess from Sunday in their rear-view mirror.

The O's were competitive and led the Yankees in the first two games of the series. They just didn't win. Sunday they were blown out and it felt like about 10 losses, but really only counted as one.

Time to get back to things that were going right for most of the start of the season. Things like playing solid defense, running the bases with some daring, watching Trey Mancini rake, playing aggressive ball and feeling good about their effort while a few wins come along as well.

The Orioles lost opening day but then won four games in a row as they allowed just 14 runs. Now they've lost four in a row while allowing 16 homers and 34 runs. Gulp and yikes.

The seven home runs allowed Sunday are the second-most in a single game in team history. The club record is 10, set on Sept. 14, 1987 when the Orioles lost 18-3 at Toronto.

The Yankees' 15 runs marked their most in a game since scoring 16 runs on Sept. 10, 2017 at Texas. Their seven homers were the team's most since the Yanks hit eight homers on July 31, 2007 versus the Chicago White Sox. They hit a total of 14 home runs and scored 29 runs during their three-game sweep of the Orioles, after hitting just six home runs in their first six games of the season. Homers accounted for 26 of New York's 29 runs during the series.

The Orioles have lost eight straight home games against the Yankees and 12 of their last 14 at Oriole Park. They were swept for the first time this year after they got swept 21 times last season.

The Orioles' bullpen slide continued Sunday. Mike Wright allowed four runs in 1 2/3 innings and has a season ERA of 18.69. New Oriole Dan Straily made his debut in relief and yielded five runs in 1 1/3 innings.

The Orioles bullpen has an ERA of 7.97 for the year and has been scored on and allowed at least one homer in all nine games this year. The 'pen has allowed 15 homers in 40 2/3 innings for an average of 3.3 per every nine innings.

Over the last four games, the O's bullpen has allowed 24 runs and nine homers over 18 2/3 innings for an 11.57 ERA.

Frederick's crazy win: Trailing 6-1 after seven innings Sunday, Single-A Frederick rallied to win via a walk-off single, 11-10 over Winston-Salem at Nymeo Field. The final two innings saw Frederick score eight in the eighth to lead 9-6. Then Winston-Salem scored four in the ninth to lead 10-9 before the Keys scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to post their first win after three losses.The final two innings of play saw a combined 14 runs, 13 hits and three lead changes.

In the eighth inning, shortstop Yeltsin Gudino hit a grand slam for Frederick. The Orioles acquired him in a trade March 29 with Toronto for cash considerations. Gudino turned 22 in January. The native of Venezuela signed with the Blue Jays as an international free agent in July 2013 and received a $1.29 million bonus.

In the last of the ninth, Stuart Levy's RBI single tied it 10-10 and Mason McCoy's RBI single won it. Frederick third baseman Jomar Reyes went 5-for-5 with five singles. He is 8-for-17 (.471) to start the season, with eight singles. Keys starter Matthias Dietz gave up six runs over three innings. Righty David Lebron threw three scoreless with seven strikeouts.

Left-hander Zac Lowther, the Orioles' 2018 co-Minor League Pitcher of the Year, made his Double-A debut Sunday in Bowie's 6-2 win at Harrisburg. He threw five scoreless innings, allowing two hits with six strikeouts on 77 pitches. Yusniel Diaz hit a two-run homer for the Baysox and Rylan Bannon added a three-run double. The Baysox are 1-3.

Triple-A Norfolk lost 4-3 at Gwinnett. Lefty Keegan Akin, the other 2018 co-Minor League Pitcher of the Year for the Orioles, went three innings, allowing three hits and one run with three walks and three strikeouts on 67 pitches. Single-A Delmarva (2-1) was rained out at Lexington. Righty Nick Vespi is scheduled to pitch tonight at Kannapolis.
