After rainout, D. Bundy talks about rumors of a call to Baltimore

BOWIE, Md. - The Orioles' top pitching prospect, right-hander Dylan Bundy, had his scheduled start rained out today. The game was called about an hour after the scheduled 2:05 p.m. start time and will likely be made up next weekend when the Baysox play at Harrisburg. It has not been yet decided whether Bundy will start tomorrow night. Tommy Hunter was sent from the Orioles to the Baysox and is tomorrow's scheduled starter at this point. So Bundy's next start is on hold for now, with a decision to come probably later tonight. Update: The word tonight is that Hunter will start Monday and Bundy will start on Tuesday for Bowie. But you can't interview Bundy right now, of course, without asking him about the possibility of his getting a call-up to Baltimore. He said no one from the club has told him anything about that, but he is quite aware of the rumors swirling about him. "Of course, you hear it, but I don't pay attention to it," Bundy said outside the Baysox clubhouse. "You put pressure on yourself thinking about stuff like that. I am just trying to stay on track with the Bowie Baysox and trying to win the Eastern League." Has he asked anyone in the organization about the possibility of his getting the call to Baltimore? "I don't have any right to ask them what is going to happen. They're going to make a decision without talking to me about it. It's all in their hands. If they feel comfortable with it, I'm great with it," he said. I asked Bundy what it would be like for him if he did get the call to the majors at just 19 and in his first season in pro ball. "It's going to be great. It's going to be an exciting day for me and my family and hope I can help the team win in whatever role it is," he said. "Not any pressure at all, it's just the same game. Little bit better hitters. Someone told me the other day, it's the same distance between the rubber and home plate no matter where you are. Just little bit bigger stands, little bit better hitters in the box. More media, but it's all the same." Bundy is 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA in his first two Bowie games. In 22 starts on the season between Single-A Delmarva, Single-A Frederick and Bowie, he is 8-3 with an ERA of 2.01. Over 98 1/3 innings, Bundy has given up just 63 hits with 24 walks and 113 strikeouts. Opposing batters are hitting just .184 against him. If he got the call to the Orioles, Bundy is confident he could do well. "Yeah, anyone can have success. But I think I can. You locate the fastball in and out, keep the ball low in the zone and in and out and mix in your offspeed pitches and you'll be fine," he said. Bundy did get some work in today. After the game was officially postponed, he still took to the field with the raindrops falling as pitching coach Kennie Steenstra and O's director of pitching development Rick Peterson looked on. "Just played catch to keep the arm fresh," Bundy said. "I usually never go without throwing the day before I start. I hate that. Even on an off-day, I'll find a way to throw. Just got some flat ground (throwing) in from 120 feet." So, hopefully later today, we'll get the word on when Bundy's next start will be. For now, though, the speculation continues as to whether or not he'll be in an Oriole uniform at some point soon.
