Another short outing for Chen

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Rays manager Joe Maddon continues to take full advantage of the expanded September roster. Some would say he abuses it. Maddon used four pitchers in the top of the fifth, again playing matchups in the middle innings. He can't control himself. Orioles manager Buck Showalter continues to show more restraint, but he removed starter Wei-Yin Chen today after 4 1/3 innings with the Orioles leading 4-2. Sean Rodriguez led off the fifth with a double. Ben Zobrist struck out on Chen's 83rd pitch, and Showalter emerged from the dugout and called upon Josh Stinson, who retired the next two batters on a fly ball and grounder. Chen allowed two runs and six hits, with two walks and four strikes. He failed to complete six innings for the fourth time in six starts. He hasn't completed the fifth inning in three of his last six. T.J. McFarland was warming as Stinson retired Evan Longoria and Wil Myers. Showalter has a lot of faith in those guys. Stinson has made six appearance this month. He hasn't allowed a run or a hit in six innings, with one walk and five strikeouts. Stinson will return for the bottom of the sixth. The Orioles let Chen's interpreter, Tim Lin, deliver the lineup card at home plate before the game. Lin started to walk back to the dugout before being told to return to the plate, where he posed for a photo with the four umpires. He seemed confused at first when players and coaches motioned for him to go back.
