Bad beginning for Bergesen (updated)

We might not sit through 15 innings tonight, but we waited out a 48-minute rain delay. Two batters and five pitches into the game, Brad Bergesen fell behind, 1-0. Two more pitches and the lead expanded to 2-0. Derek Jeter doubled, Curtis Granderson tripled and Mark Teixeira grounded to second. The Orioles' last two home games before tonight included only two extra-base hits. The Yankees matched that total after two batters. It got worse. By the time Bergesen threw his 34th pitch to strike out Brett Gardner and end the inning, the Yankees led 5-0. Nick Swisher hit a three-run double to left field, the ball glancing off Felix Pie's glove as he reached out for it. It should have been caught. Bergesen allowed three hits, walked two batters, hit one and threw a wild pitch. Chris Jakubauskas began to warm in the bullpen. Don't make me wish for more rain. Robinson Cano didn't appreciate being hit by Bergesen with two outs. You could tell by his body language. It was screaming for him to make a move toward the mound, but he resisted. And no, I don't think that one was intentional, either. I wonder if an Oriole is going to be brushed back in this game. You know how much Yankees manager Joe Girardi hates it when his guys get hit. Instant update: CC Sabathia just drilled Nick Markakis in the lower back. Both benches have been warned. Head athletic trainer Richie Bancells is checking on Markakis at first base. Down on the farm, Nick Green is starting in left field tonight for Triple-A Norfolk, and he hit a three-run double in the first inning against Syracuse Single-A Frederick lost to Potomac, 14-6, but I'm more interested in how second baseman Buck Britton drove in three more runs while going 3-for-4 with two doubles. He has 18 RBIs in his last eight games and 30 on the season to go with a .341 average. Zach Britton was checking his brother's stats on his iPad while sitting at his locker earlier today. Single-A Delmarva shortstop Manny Machado arrived safely in Sarasota today. He'll begin baseball activities tomorrow at Twin Lakes Park.

Not a good stat for the Orioles
