Nationals second baseman Daniel Murphy and starting pitcher Max Scherzer have been named to the 2016 Sporting News National League All-Star team, which was announced Wednesday.
It was Murphy's first selection, while Scherzer was also honored in 2013 on the American League team.
The 2016 team was chosen by a panel of 27 National League executives before the postseason began.
Murphy made a huge splash for the Nationals in 2016, setting career highs in batting average (.347), hits (184), homers...
Left-hander Matthew Crownover made a mechanical adjustment this season that turned things around for him after a shaky start.
In his last five starts, he allowed only six runs in 30 innings. During that span, he walked six batters and struck out 30 hitters.
High Single-A Potomac manager Tripp Keister said that pitching coach Franklin Bravo diagnosed the issue with Crownover's delivery and was able to get him to repeat to a point where he was able to get the ball down in the zone better than he...
The Glendale Desert Dogs came up a bit short in the second week of Arizona Fall League play, culminating in a 10-8 loss to Surprise on Saturday.
Glendale is now 3-8 and trails Peoria by six games in the West Division.
It was a tough day for right-hander Austin Voth, who allowed seven runs in three innings on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts. He gave up one solo shot.
His club bounced back from a 7-1 deficit to take an 8-7 lead in the top of the sixth. But the Saguaros rallied with...
Ryan Brinley had a very good season with high Single-A Potomac. The 23-year-old went 4-1 with a 1.37 ERA in 32 games with the P-Nats. He had 16 saves, 34 strikeouts and only seven walks.
The right-hander was promoted to Double-A Harrisburg on June 27 and appeared in eight games, going 0-2 with an 11.12 ERA while missing on a pair of save opportunities. He was transferred to Potomac on Aug. 1.
Brinley was so good this year at Potomac, he was rewarded with midseason and postseason Carolina League...
Right-hander Austin Voth bounced back in his second start in the Arizona Fall League on Monday.
The 24-year-old went four innings, struck out seven and didn't walk anybody in a no-decision. His Glendale Desert Dogs fell 5-4 to Peoria but were tied 1-1 when he left the game.
"He pitched like he's very capable of pitching," said pitching coach Sam Narron. "He's out here to work on that changeup. He threw quite a few of them (Monday) and they were very effective."
In his first game in...
Right-hander Phillips Valdez was on the radar among starters who are building innings in the Nationals organization. The Dominican product moved from the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League to the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League in 2013.
Valdez has a solid frame at 6-foot-2 and 160 lbs., and offers a mid-90s fastball with a changeup and a slurvy breaking pitch. In 2014, he split time between short-season Single-A Auburn and low Single-A Hagerstown.
In 2015, he went from Hagerstown to high...

Frist baseman Ryan Zimmerman had a less than Ryan Zimmerman type regular season. Could his performance in the National League Division Series catapult him into a better 2017?
Zimmerman hit .218 for the season. In the postseason, Zimmerman went 6-for-17 (.353) in the 2016 postseason. He has hit .357 in his postseason career. He even started this NLDS going 5-for-11 (.455).
Zimmerman was asked prior to NLDS Game 5 about his recent run how it will help him in the future.
He mentioned the...
The Nationals might still be licking their wounds from the Game 5 loss Thursday in the National League Division Series, but president of baseball operations and general manager Mike Rizzo built this team for the long haul and the core of this team is still very young.
Two of the youngest players reside in the outfield in center fielder Trea Turner (23) and right fielder Bryce Harper (24 on Sunday).
Today, we spotlight N.C. State product Turner.
Turner had an amazing season for the Nationals,...
Two of the biggest moves Nationals manager Dusty Baker had to make last night in Game 5 of the National League Division Series to get his lineup order were double-switches that took two of his best hitters out of the lineup.
First baseman Ryan Zimmerman was replaced by Clint Robinson in the seventh. Then third baseman Anthony Rendon was replaced by Stephen Drew in the eighth.
Rendon struggled in the series with runners in scoring position, leaving four on base in this game. But he did have a...
Max Scherzer appeared to be cruising along as he pitched six scoreless innings in Game 5 of the National League Division Series.
The Nationals were holding a 1-0 lead heading to the top of the seventh. Then everything changed.
Joc Pederson got ahold of a 95 mph Scherzer fastball and deposited it over the left-center wall to tie the game at 1-1.
Pederson was the final batter Scherzer would face. The Dodgers scored three more runs for a four-run seventh inning. It was enough to lift them to a 4-3...
Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer benefited from a spectacular diving catch to begin Game 5 of the National League Division Series against the Dodgers. Chase Utley drove a ball deep into the gap of left-center field. Trea Turner raced to his right and dove to make the catch.
Scherzer was able to get the next two batters on grounders. For the first time in the NLDS, the Dodgers did not score in the first inning.
Scherzer also got the Dodgers 1-2-3 in the second inning.
Left-hander Rich Hill...
First baseman Ryan Zimmerman has seen the Nationals grow up.
Zimmerman, then 20, played 20 games with the Nats during their first season in Washington, D.C., when they went 81-81 in 2005..
But the seasons were mostly lean in those early days for Zimmerman, when he was earning the moniker "Mr. Walk-Off" as the face of the franchise. During his tenure in Washington, the Nats have had seasons with 91, 93, 102 and 103 losses over the years.
Zimmerman, now 31, met with the media Thursday afternoon...
The calmness in the dugout during the series has been evident.
The Nationals have fallen behind 4-0, 2-0, 1-0 and 5-2 early in each game of this series. Three of the four times the club came back to tie or take the lead in that game. In the first game, they cut the deficit to 4-3 and had a few chances to take the lead. Despite 36 strikeouts in the last three games, the Nats have won two of those contests and had Game 4 tied at 5-5 in the eighth on Tuesday.
The veteran core of Jayson Werth,...

LOS ANGELES - The Dodgers found a way to stay in the National League Division Series thanks to a big hit by Chase Utley.
His eighth-inning two-out RBI single plated the go-ahead run and led the Dodgers to a 6-5 victory over the Nationals, forcing a decisive NLDS Game 5 on Thursday in D.C.. The series is now even at two games apiece.
The feeling postgame was more about how impressive a swing Utley put on the ball versus the pitch that reliever Blake Treinen threw to him.
After the Nationals had...
LOS ANGELES - In Game 1 of the National League Division Series, Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw struck out the side.
With Kershaw starting Game 4 on three days' rest, the Nationals got off to a much better start.
Trea Turner laced the first pitch into left field. Bryce Harper then battled through a nine-pitch at-bat to earn a free pass and put men on first and second with no outs.
Daniel Murphy followed with an RBI single to right field and the Nats scored first for the first time in the...
LOS ANGELES - One major theme of this National League Division Series has been scheduling and how it has affected the players, managers and coaching staffs.
Major League Baseball eliminated its scheduled off-day Sunday when Game 2 was postponed in Washington, D.C., due to inclement weather on Saturday. Game 2 was rescheduled and played Sunday in blustery conditions at Nationals Park.
Both clubs then ventured 2,300 miles to Los Angeles and arrived around 11 p.m. PDT Sunday night. Game 3 was...
LOS ANGELES - Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman had another stellar performance in the National League Division Series Monday as his club dropped the Dodgers 8-3 in Game 3.

But this series, he looks more like...
