Lombardozzi leading off, Morse hitting fifth

Lombardozzi leading off, Morse hitting fifth
Steve Lombardozzi wasn't in the Nationals' lineup yesterday. But after rain washed out the opener of this three-game series with the Braves, Lombardozzi is back in the leadoff spot and playing left field for Davey Johnson today. Michael Morse will hit fifth today against Braves righty Brandon Beachy, with the left-handed-hitting Adam LaRoche staying in the cleanup spot. Strangely, the Braves will hit Beachy eighth today, with left fielder Jose Constanza batting ninth. Here are the lineups...

Ramos will need two knee surgeries (plus Lidge, Mattheus updates)
The damage to Wilson Ramos' shredded right knee is so severe, it turns out he'll need two surgeries to fully repair it. Ramos recently underwent surgery on the meniscus in the knee, but doctors could not repair the torn ACL at this time. Manager Davey Johnson said doctors will need to wait to operate on the catcher's ACL. Johnson said he fully expects Ramos to be ready for spring training next year, but there's no chance of the 24-year-old returning this season. There is some positive...

Nats feel when they hit their stride, "it's going to be a lot of fun"
We're all plenty aware how much injuries have ravaged this Nationals team this season. But bring yourself back to April 4, the day before opening day, for a second. If I had told you back then that the Nationals would be without cleanup hitter Michael Morse and closer Drew Storen for 50 games (and counting, for Storen), face of the franchise Ryan Zimmerman for 17 days, right fielder Jayson Werth for the last three weeks and the bulk of the summer, catcher Wilson Ramos for the last two weeks...

Mattheus, DeRosa both closing in on a return

Mattheus, DeRosa both closing in on a return
You already know all the details regarding outfielder Michael Morse and his return from what he said today was an injury to the teres major tendon around his right shoulder. Quickly, here are a handful of additional injury updates: Catcher Jesus Flores was in the lineup today and was set to play for the first time since suffering a hamstring strain Sunday. Flores said he could've played on Wednesday, but the Nats held him out just to be sure. Tonight's rain delay will give him an additional...

Nationals-Braves game postponed due to severe weather (updated)

Nationals-Braves game postponed due to severe weather (updated)
Tonight's game between the Nationals and Braves has been postponed due to severe weather in the area. Details on a makeup date have not yet been announced, but I will obviously pass them along as soon as I hear anything. Conditions in the area have been terrible tonight, and it's been raining nearly nonstop for the last couple hours. There have been tornado warnings nearby, as well. Update: Tonight's game will not be made up during this homestand, and will instead be pushed back later in...

Morse: "It's better late to the party than never"

Morse: "It's better late to the party than never"
When Michael Morse first was scratched from the Nationals' lineup just prior to a spring training game on March 6, the team diagnosed the injury as a strained lat, something which both the Nats and Morse thought would only keep the slugger out for a day or two. If someone had told Morse then that he would be out nearly three months because of the injury, "I would've laughed in their face," Morse said today. Yet, here we are on June 1, and only now is the 6-foot-5, 245-lb. outfielder...

It's absolutely pouring at Nats Park

It's absolutely pouring at Nats Park
I feel bad for the tarp at Nationals Park. It's getting absolutely pounded right now by a torrential downpour. The rain is falling, the wind is literally howling and the sky is a deep gray in all directions. At least we haven't had a tornado touch down on the pitcher's mound, though. Did I just jinx it? It's looking like Michael Morse's personal opening day might need to wait another 24 hours. I just took a peak at the radar for the rest of the night, and what we're getting now just...

Back at home, with or without Morse

Back at home, with or without Morse
Following a nine-game road trip which seemed - to me, at least - to last a lot longer than a week and a half, the Nationals are finally back in the nation's capital and in the comfort of their own clubhouse. The road trip might have ended, but the tough stretch of division opponents has not. The Nats will host the Braves for three games this weekend, then will welcome the Mets to town for a three-game set before heading up to Boston to kick off the next round of interleague play. We still...

Morse plays five innings in right field during rehab game

Morse plays five innings in right field during rehab game
For the first time since re-aggravating a strained lat and being shut down in early April, outfielder Michael Morse played the field during a rehab game with Single-A Potomac tonight. Morse played five innings in right field and went 0-for-3 at the plate, making him 3-for-9 with a double and a walk in his three games with the P-Nats. Most importantly, however, he told reporters in Woodbridge, Va., that he felt no issues with his lat muscle while making a long throw from the warning track....

New outfield alignment will sacrifice defense for offense

New outfield alignment will sacrifice defense for offense
When Michael Morse returns to the Nationals, which should be in mere days, he'll give the team an offensive jolt. This is the guy who led the Nats in batting average (.303), home runs (31) and RBIs (95) last season, a guy whose slugging percentage was 99 points higher than anyone else on the Nationals' roster. When Morse returns to the Nationals, however, he'll also give the team an interesting outfield alignment, one no one could have possibly envisioned the Nats would have in early...

A strong start, a disappointing finish (plus Morse update)

A strong start, a disappointing finish (plus Morse update)
Any time you end up with a winning road trip, you'll take it. It's not easy winning on the road in this league, especially when you're playing in a division where every team has an above-.500 record. But when you start a tough nine-game road trip against division opponents by going 5-1 and then proceed to lose your final three games before heading home, it takes some of the wind out of your sails. It takes even more wind out of said sails when, on that nine-game road trip, you have to put...

The tables have turned (Nats swept away in Miami)

The tables have turned (Nats swept away in Miami)
Five days ago, Chien-Ming Wang jogged out of the bullpen to relieve Ross Detwiler after a mediocre start. Today, the reverse happened. Wang went just four-plus innings in his first start of the season, giving up four runs. He allowed 10 baserunners in that time (seven hits and three walks) and clearly wasn't showing the command that we saw early in spring training when the veteran right-hander was pounding his sinker down in the zone and locating his offspeed stuff for strikes. Detwiler...

Solano gets first major league start

Solano gets first major league start
After making a strong first impression last night by smacking a pinch hit, opposite-field double in his first major league at-bat, Jhonatan Solano will get another first tonight: he'll make his first big league start behind the plate. Solano will catch Chien-Ming Wang and hit eighth for manager Davey Johnson. Perhaps because of his past success against Marlins starter Josh Johnson, Roger Bernadina will get his first start since May 19 and will play right field, while Bryce Harper will move...

Against Johnson, Nats face another tough test

Against Johnson, Nats face another tough test
Last night, the Nationals squared off against Marlins starter Anibal Sanchez, who still has never lost to the Nats in what's now 19 career starts. Who do the Nats face tonight as they look to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the Fish? None other than Josh Johnson, who has never lost to the Nationals in 14 career starts. Fantastic. Johnson has gone 7-0 with a 3.14 ERA in his career against Washington, striking out 82 Nats over 83 innings pitched. The righty's 2012 numbers have been...

Looking back at last night

Looking back at last night
It's kind of hard to believe, given his impressive 3.17 ERA and six quality starts in 10 outings, but Edwin Jackson still has just one win on the season. Over his last five starts, Jackson has allowed just 10 earned runs in 33 2/3 innings (a 2.67 ERA) with a .212 batting average against, a 0.96 WHIP and a 24/7 strikeout to walk ratio. He's 0-2 in that five-game span. The poor guy can't buy a victory. Jackson had another shot at one last night, leading 1-0 in the sixth inning, but allowed...

Quite a way to notch a first major league RBI (another miss in Miami)

Quite a way to notch a first major league RBI (another miss in Miami)
It might not be the sexiest way to drive in a run, but true baseball fans will love the way Corey Brown recorded his first major league RBI tonight. With Ian Desmond sprinting down the third-base line toward the plate with one out, Brown was called on to square around and convert a suicide squeeze. He got a 1-1 changeup from Marlins starter Anibal Sanchez and deadened it in front of the plate, forcing catcher John Buck to come out and make a play on the ball. Desmond scored easily, giving the...

Solano activated, Espinosa gets a day off
The Nationals have officially called up catcher Jhonatan Solano from Triple-A Syracuse, giving them a third catcher on the 25-man roster and providing some insurance in case Jesus Flores isn't able to return from a hamstring injury as quickly as hoped. Solano, who batted .250 with two doubles, two RBIs and eight runs scored in 13 games with Syracuse this season, will wear No. 23. The 26-year-old threw out 40 percent of runners trying to steal (4-of-10) for the Chiefs this season Carlos...

Looking back on a wild holiday weekend

Looking back on a wild holiday weekend
No, I'm not talking about my trip to Vegas, which was lots of fun but will not be discussed in this space. I can tell you that I'm back on the East Coast in one piece, sunburn-free and with more money than when I left. So that's all good news. Not much went down Nationals-wise while I was away, unless you count an injury to the Nats' top pinch hitter, a change in the starting rotation, a sweep of a hot division rival, another (yes, another) Nats catcher being knocked out of a game due to...
