Guthrie is getting the job done (plus Florimon move)

Guthrie is getting the job done (plus Florimon move)
So what do CC Sabathia, Justin Verlander, Felix Hernandez, Mark Buehrle, John Lackey, Rick Porcello and Gil Meche all have common? Besides being pretty good pitchers they all have ERA's higher than Jeremy Guthrie right now. I wonder how many fans would admit they wanted Guthrie gone after he led the AL in losses and homers allowed last year. He went 10-17, 5.04. Now after ten starts, he is 3-4, 3.64. He is tied for first in the AL with eight quality starts and that is in ten outings. He...

Quotes and notes to wrap up a 5-1 win over the A's

Quotes and notes to wrap up a 5-1 win over the A's
Some more clubhouse quotes after the Orioles 5-1 win over Oakland from Ty Wigginton, Jeremy Guthrie and Nick Markakis. Wigginton on the win: "A lot of credit goes to Guthrie. He did a good job getting us in and out of the dugout. Miggy got a couple of walks and Nicky came through with a big homer late in the game." Guthrie on his night: "I thought the quality of my stuff was so-so. This was not one of my better games pitched, but it was a nice way to battle. That's important,...

Luke Scott updates his shoulder injury

Luke Scott updates his shoulder injury
Two injuries on the same play. Yep, sounds like the 2010 Orioles. On the same play where Alfredo Simon suffered a hamstring injury Sunday at Washington, Luke Scott suffered a strained left shoulder. He was in the original starting lineup tonight, but was scratched before game time. "Right now it feels better. It was aggravated and inflamed. But I've got some good anti-inflammatories in me and I'm icing it for the second time. I'm hoping it will be getting better here very soon,"...

O's use walks and Guthrie's effort to win in series opener

O's use walks and Guthrie's effort to win in series opener
Oakland pitchers walked the first two batters in the fourth and sixth innings tonight and the Orioles turned that into three runs in a 5-1 win over the A's in front of 14,686 Tuesday at Camden Yards. Ty Wigginton and Adam Jones had sac flies in the sixth after the O's took advantage of an error to plate a run in the fourth. Nick Markakis hit a solo homer in the eighth. It was just his third of the year and first in 22 games since May 1st when he homered vs. Boston. Later that inning, Matt...

Arrieta impressive again

Arrieta impressive again
I didn't see one pitch of the game, but Jake Arrieta was impressive in the box score again and is doing all he can to get a callup to Baltimore. Today he allowed just one run over seven innings as Norfolk bested Rochester, 2-1. He threw 112 pitches, 70 for strikes. Arrieta is now 5-2, 1.86 through ten starts. On the year, he has allowed 1 ER or less in six of his ten starts. He has now pitched 63 innings, allowing just 40 hits with 32 walks and 55 strikeouts. Lefty batters are hitting...

Daunting stat

Daunting stat
Here is a stat that is rather amazing. If you think the Orioles have played a tough schedule so far, peak ahead a few weeks. Kal from MASN, our co-worker, not that Cal, points out this fact. Starting with this series vs. Oakland, the Orioles will play 17 of the next 18 series, vs. clubs with a current winning record. The only club coming up that is currently not over .500 is the series with the Mets, who are now 22-23, starting June 11th. During those 18 series, the O's will play nine...

Hernandez accepts the move to the bullpen

Hernandez accepts the move to the bullpen
Just four days after picking up his first win of the season and ending a 16-start winless stretch, today David Hernandez found out the news he is heading to the Orioles bullpen. Hernandez certainly didn't seemed thrilled by the news but handled himself well when the reporters gathered around his locker. "I would rather be a starter, but right now our team needs some guys in the bullpen. We've got two guys down, so I'll be ready. "I think I can be successful either way, starting or...

MacPhail speaks on the Trembley front

MacPhail speaks on the Trembley front
Maybe O's team president Andy MacPhail has contemplated firing his manager, Dave Trembley, but he will not admit to that publicly. He was asked by MASNSports.com if he contemplated a manager change on Monday. "No, we had our hands full dealing with the fact that two of our relief pitchers are going on the DL." He was asked about his commitment to Trembley and if he will be O's manager for the rest of this season. "Right now, I'm saying what I've always said and continue to say. ...

The defense has been shaky on the farm

The defense has been shaky on the farm
Here is a stat that is not good for the Orioles minor leagues. All four O's affiliates lead their respective leagues in errors. Norfolk has made 47 errors, most in the International League. Bowie leads its league with 49; Frederick tops the Carolina League with 58; and Delmarva has committed a whopping 77 errors. That is the most in the Sally League. The shortstop position has become an issue on the O's farm, but the club has taken some steps to fix the problem. Pedro Florimon, a member...

Let's talk about criticism of the Orioles

Let's talk about criticism of the Orioles
We are at a point and time in sports cyberspace where fans on message boards can be nastier than ever. Sometimes when the home team loses they want to extract a pound or two of flesh. Some just need to vent and bash and the message boards are there for them. If you are part of the Orioles organization, it should come as no surprise that your team is getting crushed on those boards and on our own MASNsports.com blogs as well. No one should be surprised. At 14-31, the Orioles have...

Checking in with Brandon Snyder (Givens to Delmarva)

Checking in with Brandon Snyder (Givens to Delmarva)
Afternoon update: The Orioles are sending Mychal Givens, their second-round draft pick last year, to the Delmarva Shorebirds. Tyler Kolodny has been transferred to Aberdeen's roster. The 20-year-old Givens will join Delmarva on the road in Hickory, North Carolina. Now back to the Brandon Snyder story - It's only four games. But it's four games where the hits have fallen in for Brandon Snyder, the Orioles possible first baseman of the future, who has had a mostly rough 2010 season...

Not expecting big news today

Not expecting big news today
I sure could be wrong, but I don't expect any grand announcements today about Dave Trembley. I am guessing, without any inside info, that he will be the manager Tuesday vs. Oakland and losing two of three to Washington should not change anything. But, moving forward, here are some moves I would like to see the Orioles make. Some that can happen sooner and others are more big-picture items. *Move David Hernandez to the bullpen. I think he has a future possibly in late relief but for now...

Willingham's walk off

Willingham's walk off
Does it seem like the Orioles don't have much luck sometimes? Alfredo Simon retired all four batters he faced in Washington today. He got a ground out to start the last of the tenth, but while running to cover first base on that grounder, seemed to strain a hamstring and had to leave the game. Cla Meredith came on and faced Josh Willingham. The count reached 2-1 and then Meredith left a pitch up in the zone and Willingham hit it out to left center for a game-winning homer as the Nats...

Overtime, okay, extra innings

Overtime, okay, extra innings
The O's and Nats, who play a lot of close games, are now in the tenth inning at Washington tied 3-3. The Orioles scored two runs in the ninth off Matt Capps, who had been 16 for 16 in save situations. He came on to protect a 3-1 lead in the ninth. With one out, Luke Scott reached on an infield single and Adam Jones doubled to right. A Matt Wieters grounder scored a run to make it 3-2 and Julio Lugo blooped an RBI single to right with two outs to tie the game. Alfredo Simon pitched a 1-2-3...

Corey Patterson's mental mistake

Corey Patterson's mental mistake
Corey Patterson likely cost the O's a run in the sixth inning at Washington. A run that would have cut the Nats lead in the game to 3-2. Patterson walked and stolen second. When Nick Markakis hit a fly ball to deep center, Patterson strayed off the bag at second and did not tag up. He would have made third easily. The next hitter, Miguel Tejada, hit a routine grounder to short. Washington's infield would not have been playing in with a two-run lead and that would have likely plated...

Another GIDP

Another GIDP
Miguel Tejada grounded into a double play in the top of the first today to kill a rally. The O's had runners on first and third and scored a run on the grounder, but it took the air out of their first-inning rally. The O's are among the AL leaders in hitting into double plays: 53 - Minnesota 49 - Orioles 48 - KC Here are the O's leaders in GIDP's: (through Saturday) 6 - Garrett Atkins, Adam Jones, Ty Wigginton 5 - Nick Markakis, Nolan Reimold, Matt Wieters 4 - Miguel Tejada No Oriole is...

The series so far and today's pitchers (plus minor lg note)
The O's and Nats have split 5-3 and 7-6 decisions this weekend with the third and deciding game of the series today at 1:35 at Nats Park. The Orioles have scored 11 runs in the series and given up 10. They are batting .271 (19 for 70) in the two games without a double and triple, but with three homers. They are 4 for 12 with runners in scoring position. The team ERA is 5.29. The Orioles are 1-2 this year in the third game of a series where the clubs have split the first two...

Nats post 7-6 win to even series

Nats post 7-6 win to even series
After pitching to an ERA of 2.77 over his previous four starts, the Orioles staked Brad Bergesen to a 6-3 lead today. But he could not hold it. The Nationals scored four runs in the sixth off Bergesen and Mark Hendrickson to rally for a 7-6 lead and win over the Orioles on Saturday afternoon. The Nats had not held a lead in this series until their five-hit sixth frame today which featured a Roger Bernadina RBI triple, an Alberto Gonzalez pinch-hit RBI single and Adam Dunn's two-run single. ...

Wiggy notes
Ty Wigginton has tied his season-high and career-high with a 4-RBI game today at Washington. He hit a two-run single with two outs in the first and a two-run homer to left on a 1-0 pitch off Craig Stammen in the sixth. He now has 13 homers, two more than last year and 31 RBI, 10 fewer than last year. He also had 4 RBI on April 18 vs. Oakland. The 4 RBI ties his single game career best and he has now done that eight times. AL home run leaders, through Friday's games: 14 - Paul Konerko,...

Ryan Berry to Frederick

Ryan Berry to Frederick
The Orioles are moving 21-year-old, right-hander Ryan Berry from Delmarva to Frederick where he is expected to start for the Keys tonight at home vs. Kinston. Berry, a ninth-round draft pick last June from Rice, went 0-3, 3.50 in eight starts at Delmarva. He led the Shorebirds staff with 43 strikeouts to just 11 walks over 46 1/3 innings. His ERA was at 2.40 before he gave up seven runs and ten hits in his last start for Delmarva last Sunday. Here is recap of today's minor league...
