The proud papa (plus Bowie moves)

There are now two Shelbys in the Orioles organization. Today the Orioles drafted Grambling State outfielder Jeremy Shelby, the son of John "T-Bone" Shelby, the Birds first base coach, in the 38th round. "I was hoping somebody would take a chance and they told me that they would draft him. I called him to see if he was listening to it. He listened all day yesterday and was frustrated (when he wasn't taken). So he didn't even listen today and I broke the news to him. "He was hollering and screaming. The whole family, we're all excited," John Shelby said today in the O's clubhouse. Jeremy, who was drafted previously by San Diego in round 46 in 2005, hit .360-6-42 in 51 games this year for Grambling State. He stole 21 of 24 bases and had a .556 slugging percentage. "I'm excited about it. I was hoping he'd get the opportunity to play. He got drafted in high school and didn't really think he was ready. He's a smart student and wanted to go to school. This year, he's a fifth-year senior because he got hurt last year. "He finished with a good season, hit about .360 and led the team in average and tied for RBI's. The team won the conference for the first time in 25 years. I'm very excited and he's very excited about it." The 22-year-old Jeremy is a 6'4", 190-pound right-handed hitter. T-Bone Shelby knew the O's had some interest in his second eldest son. "They had a scout down in Louisiana that had been talking to him. The Braves had a scout that was watching him. Kansas City and Pittsburgh also. I was just hoping one of those teams took some interest in him and gave him an opportunity. "I think he'll probably be assigned to Bluefield. I haven't talked to the scouting director, but he's supposed to come down today and give me some information." Shelby's oldest son, John the third, is an outfielder with Double-A Birmingham in the White Sox system. This season he is batting .235-4-15 in 47 games. Note from Bowie; The Baysox announced a series of roster moves over the last two days. On Monday, C Phil Britton was transferred to class Single-A Aberdeen. On Tuesday, RHP Tim Bascom was transferred to class Single-A Aberdeen, C Zach Booker was transferred to Bowie from class Single-A Aberdeen and RHP Josh Perrault was activated from the Disabled List. With the moves, the Baysox maintain a complete 24-man roster. I'm sure the Bascom to Aberdeen move was a "paper move" only to remove him from the Bowie roster. Bascom is still with the Norfolk team and should be activated tomorrow by the Tides and is expected to start on the mound in his Triple-A debut for Norfolk on Thursday night.
